Liberty Chanin, Austin College, Women's Swimming & Diving - Character & Community

LIBERTY CHANIN OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a senior on the women's swimming and diving team from Irving, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning March 6.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Liberty has made quite a name for herself during her four years at Austin College. She’s been an All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference swimmer, including bringing home an individual championship in 2022, in addition to recently being named as a College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honoree for her stellar work in the classroom.

On top of being a record-setting swimmer for the ‘Roos, currently boasting program bests in multiple events including the 1650 freestyle, she’s also been remarkably active on campus during her time in Sherman. She’s demonstrated her leadership not just within her team, but as a campus tour guide, as well as being a Sally Posey Fellow for her leadership and service to Austin College.

Last fall, Liberty organized a food drive that brought in more than 1,300 items, and she’s also a member of Austin College’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. She is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society, as well as being a member of the Psi Chi Psychology, Phi Alpha Theta History, and Pi Delta Phi French Honor Societies.

Along with serving as the captain of the swim team, her leadership skills have also been recognized with the Goodloe Lewis Scholarship, which she received in recognition of her leadership and involvement in a multitude of extracurricular activities at Austin College. Her coaches and teammates have also acknowledged her hard work and dedication with the women’s swim program’s Sig Lawson Award, given annually to the hardest working member of the team. She’s also served as a Sallie Majors Intern, helping to plan and lead events for the Presbyterian church, and received the Dorothy Abernathy Memorial Scholarship from the Austin College religious life department for her further leadership within the church.
