JACKSON, Miss. - Day two of the 2009 SCAC Baseball Championship produced an unlikely elimination, a run-rule victory and an historic individual performance. Top-seeded Millsaps was bounced from the tournament by suffering a heartbreaking 9-8 loss to Hendrix. Trinity beat Centre 14-4 in eight innings and DePauw's Justin Weiner became the league's career stolen bases leader.
In the day's first game, DePauw's Mike Peterson went the distance against SCAC East Division rival Rhodes College in the first elimination game of the 2009 SCAC Baseball Championship tournament. Peterson scattered seven hits, struck out seven and allowed just two earned runs in nine innings in a 7-2 win. DePauw senior center fielder Justin Weiner became the SCAC's career stolen bases leader with four swipes against the Lynx. Weiner's 92 career stolen bases surpassed the previous mark of 88 set by Trinity's Kenneth Sharp from 2000-03. The No. 5-9 hitters accounted for all six of the Tigers' runs.
The Hendrix College Warriors survived a furious Millsaps College comeback attempt in the second game of day two at the 2009 SCAC Baseball championship and came away with a 9-8 win and eliminated the host Majors from the tournament. With runners on second and third and and no body out, Warriors center fielder Daniel Ward made a full-extension diving catch to rob Bill Murphy of extra bases, which essentially saved the game for Hendrix. Jeff Forgerson led the way for Hendrix as he finished 3-for-4 at the plate with with two runs batted in and scored a run. Jordan Suydam picked up the win as he pitched seven innings and yielded eight runs (all earned).

The Trinity University offense continued its strong start at the SCAC Baseball Championship by tallying 19 hits in a 14-4 eight inning victory over Centre College in the third and final game of day two. The Tigers have totaled 40 hits in its first two games. Though the final score won't show it, the two team were tied, 4-4, until Trinity scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to pull away for the win. Leading Trinity was Jordan Pennington who went 4-for-6 with three runs scored, three RBI and hit a home run. Trinity hit .475 (19-for-40) as a team. Centre, on the other hand was limited to 7-of-32 (.219) at the plate.
SCAC Championship action resumes April 25 at Noon CT with
semifinal action as West Division rivals Hendrix and Trinity square
off with a berth in the championship round on the line. DePauw and
Centre then play at 3:30 p.m. CT in an elimination game. The winner
of DePauw/Centre will play the loser of Hendrix/Trinity game in an
elimination game in the nightcap at 7 p.m. CT.
