SUWANEE, Ga. - Behind Mike Moore's 30 points, the DePauw Tigers snapped Centre's 22 game regualr-season SCAC winning streak with a 78-74 home win. Elsewhere in the SCAC West Division, Trinity continued its winning ways by extending its winning streak to 10 games with two league wins.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin extended
its winning streak to four games with wins over Milwaukee School of
Engineering, Colorado College and the University of Dallas over the
holidays, making it the longest win streak since the ‘Roos
won seven in a row in 2000. The ‘Roos are now 7-4
overall and 2-1 in conference play, thanks in large part to Kola
Alade's 15.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists over that three
game stretch to go along with his 59.3% shooting. Mark Foster
scored 17 and Adam Bishop hit a jumper to beat the shot clock with
just over a minute left to lead the ‘Roos past Milwaukee by a
final of 58-54 on December 29, and Chris Sturtevant scored 18 in an
80-72 win over Colorado College. Alade led the way against the
Crusaders with 18 points in a 62-57 win, and Sturtevant added 12
points and eight boards. Spencer Burke blocked 10 shots during
the three games, including six against Milwaukee.
Birmingham-Southern (7-4) collected a pair of wins
this weekend over Sewanee and Oglethorpe in Birmingham. Both
games were hotly contested with the Panthers able to pull away at
the end. On Friday, a steal from Michael Rebarchak and a dish
to Isiah Doaty put the Panthers up one with 1:56
remaining. Another Sewanee turnover with just over a minute
gave the ball back to BSC, up one, 45-44. Roger Williams hit
the front-end of a one-and-one to put BSC up two and the Panthers
were able to hold on for the win. Nathan West hit
critical three and four foul shots to help seal the win in the
closing minutes. BSC will be on the road this week, at DePauw
on Friday for a 5 p.m. tip, and at Centre at noon on Sunday.
Centre ended 2008 by splitting a pair of games in
its annual holiday tournament and then dropped its first game of
2009 on the road. The Colonels fell to Piedmont 82-75 on the first
day of the tournament snapping an 18-game tournament winning
streak. It also snapped a streak of 12 straight years winning on
the first day of the tournament. Centre bounced back one day later
to defeat Maryville (Tenn.) for the second time this year, winning
78-72 at home this time. Senior guard Kris Bentley and junior
forward Danny Noll were each named to the All-Tournament Team. The
Colonels fell 78-74 to DePauw. The loss snapped an SCAC record
22-game regular season conference winning streak. Centre is now 8-3
overall and 2-1 in the SCAC with home league games against Rhodes
and Birmingham-Southern up next.
After a 28-day layoff, Colorado
College returned to action and dropped an 80-72
decision at Austin College. Senior guard Lance Jacobs and sophomore
guard Nick Rose led the Tiger offense with 18 points apiece. It was
the sixth consecutive time and 10th time in 11 games Rose scored in
double-figures. Jacobs reached double-figure points for the fourth
time. Junior forward Brady Ohlsen added 13 points to reach double
figures for the 10th time. Senior point guard Jarrell Sweet had 11
points, a team-high seven rebounds and four assists. Colorado
College will continue its five-game road swing when it
travels to Hendrix College and Millsaps College for conference
games next Friday and Sunday, respectively.
DePauw extended its win streak to three
straight after capturing its second consecutive Tampa Bay Shootout
title and then ended Centre's SCAC-record 22-game regular season
conference win streak. The Tigers defeated Drew (76-56) and
Huntingdon (74-58) at the Shootout and topped Centre, 78-74. In the
three games, Mike Moore paced the Tigers with 20.3 points and 5.3
assists per game and also grabbed 5.3 rebounds. Tom Callen
followed with 16.3 points and Steve Lemasters added 16.0. Moore
just missed a triple-double against Drew with 10 points, a
career-high nine rebounds and nine assists. Moore broke the
SCAC career assists record of 499 held by Rhodes' Robert Johnson
(1992-96). In the Drew game, Lemasters hit nine three-pointers
which broke the DePauw single-game record and scored a career-high
27 points. Moore then netted 30 in the win over Centre.
Hendrix went 2-2 over the break with wins over
Concordia University and Southwestern University. The Warriors
lost to Dickinson College and Trinity University. Hendrix now
stands at 8-3 overall and 2-1 in SCAC play. Senior forward
Andrew King posted a season-high 27 points on 10-of-15
shooting from the field in the Warriors' 73-62 loss to Dickinson in
their opening game of the Land of Magic Classic on Dec.

the Warriors' 12-4 run late in the second half to overcome
Concordia, 72-60, on Dec. 29 in their final game of the Land of
Magic Classic. Junior guard Cal Rose knocked down a season-high
five 3-pointers and led the Warriors with a game-high 20 points in
their 81-76 victory over Southwestern on Jan. 2. Trinity
grabbed an early lead and never looked back thanks to Luke
Caldarera's 27-point performance as the Tigers defeated Hendrix,
69-53, on Jan. 3.
Millsaps dropped to 2-9 and 0-3 in SCAC play
after falling in two, tight games at Trinity (55-50) and
Southwestern (50-48) last weekend. The Majors combined to shoot
just 30 percent from the floor in the two games, but managed to
keep them close with their defensive efforts. Trinity led for all
but 5 minutes in a 5-point Friday win, despite 17 points from Blake
Martinez and 16 from Chris Sanders. Points in the paint
proved to be the difference maker, with TU scoring 30 to Millsaps'
12. Against SU on Sunday, Sanders' fourth career double-double (16
points, 10 boards) and Chris Ingle's career-high 11 rebounds was
not enough, as the Pirates' Travis Barber hit the go-ahead layup
with 18 seconds left and the ensuing free throw to give the home
team a 2-point win. The Majors will continue SCAC play this weekend
at home, welcoming Austin and Colorado College to town Jan. 9 and
11.
Oglethorpe split two road contests this past
weekend, topping Rhodes in Memphis and losing to
Birmingham-Southern in Alabama. On Friday, the Petrels jumped all
over the Lynx with hot first half shooting on their way to posting
an insurmountable 49-24 halftime lead. Oglethorpe ultimately won
85-78 as four starters, led by Wade Weldon and Joe Kennedy's 21
points each, hit for double-figures. On Sunday, the Petrels held a
56-54 lead over the Panthers with 4:45 to play but saw the Panthers
ignite for a 20-7 run to close the game and earn the 74-63 victory.
Oglethorpe was led by sophomore Todd Ward who recorded a
double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Alex Richey connected
on 6 of 10 attempts from downtown en route to posting a game-high
22 points in the loss. At 9-3 (2-1) on the season, the Petrels will
host Sewanee this Saturday night.
Rhodes dropped all 3 of their week's
games. Losing to Westminster (Mo.) on December
29th, Cory Smith led the way for the Lynx with 20 points
and Kory Kilpatrick had 11 rebounds. In Rhodes' opening SCAC
games, the Lynx dropped both games, losing to Oglethorpe on Friday
night 78-85. The Lynx fell behind at halftime by 24 points but
closed the game to within 5 points late in the second
half. Rhodes was led by Smith who notched his first career
triple-double scoring 12 points, 11 rebounds and a career high 11
assists. Nathan Ollie led the Lynx with 18 points and
Kilpatrick grabbed 14 rebounds. On Sunday, Rhodes lost to
Sewanee 75-64. Smith led the Lynx with 17
points. Andyshea Saberioon scored a career 15 points and Ollie
chipped in 12 points in the losing effort.
Sewanee went 1-1 this weekend after a close loss
to Birmingham-Southern Friday and a win over Rhodes on Sunday. Ben
Pursell logged a pair of double-doubles on the weekend with 16
points and 13 rebounds on Friday and 15 points and 16 rebounds on
Sunday. He also surpassed the 1,000 career point mark, taking his
career total to 1,003. Pursell is currently third in the SCAC in
rebounding and is averaging 13 points per game and nine rebounds
per game. Senior Bradley Pierson led Sewanee's scoring this weekend
with performances of 11 and 23 points. Sewanee is currently 3-8 and
will play at Oglethorpe on Saturday.
Southwestern was active during the holiday break.
The Pirates defeated SUNY Institute of Technology on Monday,
December 29th, 66-57. Junior guard Anthony Cox and
sophomore guard Ryan Bill led the way with 11 points each.
Southwestern faced a hot shooting Hendrix on January
2nd. The Warriors shot nearly 50% from the field and
were 50% from behind the arc. Junior guard Zach Bergstrom led the
Pirates with 16 points. Sunday, Southwestern faced off against
Millsaps. The Pirates led most of the game until late in the second
half. After a missed free throw by Millsaps, Southwestern came down
the floor and Anthony Cox made a perfect bounce pass to a cutting
Travis Barber who converted the layup and was fouled on the play.
Barber connected on the free throw to put the Pirates up by 2 with
just 18 seconds remaining, as the Pirates went on to win 50-48. SU
now sit at 8-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference as they turn their
focus to visiting conference foe Trinity on Friday, January
9th at 6:00 p.m.
No. 16 Trinity went 3-0 over the past week, including a pair of wins in its SCAC home openers against Millsaps and Hendrix. Against Hendrix, Caldarera led the team with 27 points and 10 boards, hitting 11-14 from the field. Trinity will travel to Georgetown, Texas, on Friday night for its only game this week, against SCAC rival Southwestern.
