Football Recap (Week 8) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - The DePauw University Tigers used a 10-play 65 yard drive late in the fourth quarter against Colorado College to send the game into overtime, where DePauw settled for a field goal and then held on for a thrilling 37-34 overtime victory on Saturday October, 25. Trinity University survived a scare from Sewanee, 27-13, to set up the much anticipated matchup with #5 Millsasps.

The Austin College football team came out on top in a defensive slugfest against Rhodes, getting a late touchdown on an interception by Matt Finke in a 17-14 victory. The win is the fourth straight for the 'Roos and brings their record to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The last time Austin College won four in a row was during the 2000 season. Finke had a big day in the defensive backfield, picking off two passes, recovering a fumble and blocking his third kick of the season. Finke's touchdown was his third of the year, after having previously returned a fumble and a blocked kick for scores. Andy Braly rushed 17 times for 71 yards and a touchdown and also completed 10-of-17 passes for 132 yards. Ross Hasten and Zach Mamot ran for 46 and 45 yards. Josh Willis had a strong game, averaging 48.3 yards per punt including a 66 yarder, the longest of his career. Willis also made five tackles from his safety position. This week the 'Roos host DePauw for their final home game of the year in hopes of extending their winning streak.

Birmingham-Southern suffered another disappointing loss this week, losing to Centre College on the road, 25-6. The Panthers scored first on a field goal by Raymond Josof and led for much of the first half, but were not able to hang on to the lead. Josof made another field goal later in the game in BSC's only other scoring drive. Joe Thigpen led the Panthers with 13 completions in 20 attempts with one interception and 116 passing yards, while Walter Arrington led BSC on the ground with 63 yards. The team is on the road again this weekend, traveling to face Colorado College, Saturday, at 12 p.m. MT.

Coming off its bye week, the Centre defense came up big time after time as the Colonels defeated Birmingham Southern 25-6 on Homecoming Weekend. The Panthers started four first-half drives inside the Centre 35-yard line, but were turned away each time by the Colonels unable to put any points on the board. Centre was out-gained 265-252 in total offensive yards and trailed 34:05-25:55 in time of possession, but forced three turnovers and limited Birmingham Southern to only four of 16 on third-down conversions. Freshman quarterback Tyler Osterman threw two touchdown passes and freshman running back Jonathan Pinque rushed for 80 yards and another score, while senior Adam Hay and juniors Brian Sneed and Sean Swallen led the defense. Centre, now 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the SCAC, will travel to Memphis, Tenn. Saturday, Nov. 1 to play Rhodes.

Colorado College Senior quarterback Jon McDonald moved into a tie for sixth place for career touchdown passes when he connected with Luke Northam on a four-yard scoring strike. He is now tied with Troy Knox (1992-93) and Chris Witt (1997-00) with 21. Macias holds fifth place with 29. With 166 passing yards, McDonald moved past Marc Buchanan (1972-75) for fifth sixth place with 2,688 career passing yards. He also went over the 1,000 career rushing yards mark with 71 yards against DePauw. The Tigers 34 offensive points against DePauw was more than the team generated in its first five games. Northam's four-yard touchdown reception at DePauw was the first of his career. He also had four carries for 41 yards in his second game at running back. Junior defensive back Brendan Ross had 10 total tackles (3s/7a) against DePauw to hit double figures for the second time this season and the fourth time in his career. He leads the team with 31 solo and 46 total tackles. Colorado College plays host to Birmingham-Southern College for the first time on Saturday when the teams square off on Saturday at Washburn Field.

Spud Dick tossed a 5-yard scoring pass to Alex Koors with 13 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and Jordan Havercamp booted a 20-yard field goal in the first overtime to give DePauw a 37-34 win over Colorado College. The game marked the second straight year the teams have battled to overtime. The host Tigers took a 21-14 halftime lead into halftime and extended it to 24-14 in the third, but Colorado College battled back with a pair of touchdowns in a one-minute span of the third to take a 27-24 advantage. Havercamp tied the contest with 6:12 left in regulation as he booted a 31-yard field goal, but the guests regained the lead on the next series as Sean Farrell rushed from one yard out with 1:41 remaining. The Tigers forced the extra session with a 10-play, 65-yard drive capped by Dick's scoring toss to Koors. DePauw took possession first in the overtime and advanced to the Colorado College 1 before losing a yard on third down and settling for Havercamp's 20-yard field goal. Colorado College was unable to pick up a first down and Tyler Brickell's 41-yard field goal attempt was just short. DePauw outgained Colorado College, 523-409, and totaled 437 passing yards which was the second-highest single-game total in school history. Havercamp booted three field goals and Alex Fitch blocked a third quarter extra point and a fourth quarter field goal. Dick completed 32-of-44 passes for a career-high 405 yards which was the fifth-highest single-game performance by a DePauw player.

No. 5 Millsaps (7-0, 5-0 SCAC) was idle last weekend.  The Majors will travel to 14th-ranked Trinity (Texas) on Nov. 1 in a game that will likely decide who wins the SCAC and earns the automatic berth into the playoffs. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.  Trinity (7-0, 4-0 SCAC) has won 36-straight conference games inside the confines of E.M. Stevens Field, while the Majors bring a 9-game road conference winning-streak to town.

Sewanee hosted Trinity on Saturday in a packed Harris Stadium and after giving visiting Trinity a run for its money in the second quarter, fell 27-13 in the end. Trinity led 17-13 at the half. A pair of Al Furlow touchdowns and a Peter Licalzi field goal got Trinity out to a 17-0 lead early in the game. Sewanee rallied, though, and scored two touchdowns late in the second half on Patrick Shelton and Trey Reliford runs. Reliford's touchdown was initially set up by a successful Geoffrey Marolda  on-side kick on a kickoff. The visiting #14 Tigers stepped it up in the second, holding the Sewanee offense scoreless and securing another Furlow touchdown and another Licalzi field goal in the third quarter to secure the 27-13 score in favor of Trinity. Defensively, senior Tyler Brantley  led Sewanee's effort with 13 total tackles. Charles Lapeyre grabbed Sewanee's only interception of the day and also was in on four total tackles. Sewanee is 2-5 and will have next weekend off before facing Birmingham-Southern in Birmingham on November 8.

No. 14 Trinity won a Saturday afternoon road game in SCAC play, defeating Sewanee-University of the South 27-13 at McGee Field. Trinity jumped out to a 17-0 lead before Sewanee staged a second quarter comeback to cut the lead to just four points (17-13) at the half.  Trinity's defense played one of its best halves of the year over the final two quarters, though, squashing any chance of a Sewanee upset.  The defense gave up just 85 yards of total offense in the second half and forced two turnovers.  Running back Al Furlow, filling in for injured starter Chris Baer, led the team in both rushing and receiving in the game.  He rushed 20 times for a team season-high 161 yards and a touchdown, then caught eight passes for 72 yards and two more scores. Trinity's defense forced four turnovers in the game, marking the sixth time this season that the team has benefitted from two or more turnovers in a game.  The Tiger defense had three interceptions for the second straight week. Up next will be the highly-anticipated matchup between last year's SCAC Co-Champions.  Millsaps College will come to San Antonio for the first time since 2005 in a game that could very well decide this year's conference title.  The game will feature two teams ranked in the top 15 nationally, according to both the AFCA and D3football.com polls. Saturday will be the 32nd meeting between the two teams, with Millsaps holding a slight 16-15 edge in the series.  Trinity has won six of the past seven meetings, having last lost in 2006 in Jackson, Miss.
