CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Trinity University
Tigers sophomore doubles team of Bobby Cocanougher of Southlake,
Texas; and Cory Kowal of Austin, Texas (Anderson); advanced to the
NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships doubles
quarterfinals Friday.
The Tiger duo came from behind to defeat Andrew Thompson and David
Farah of Middlebury College 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 at Biszantz Family
Tennis Center. Cocanougher and Kowal, who became All-Americans last
fall by winning the ITA regional doubles crown, were on the ropes
in the second set as the Middlebury team was serving for the
match.
Cocanougher and Kowal will take on top seeds Mike Burdakin and John
Kauss of Gustavus Adolphus College Saturday in the quarters.
Earlier, Kauss, the No. 1 seed in singles, beat Trinity first-year
player Max Frey of Broken Arrow, Okla. (Tulsa Holland Hall), 6-2,
6-1 in the opening round.
Frey captured Southwest Region singles title last fall in San
Antonio, and earned All-America honors. He went on to the National
Small College Championships at Mobile, Ala. Frey was also elected
the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Player of
the Year.
