SUWANEE, Ga. - Several SCAC teams participated in tournaments over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. The DePauw Tigers won the Mike Rockicki Community Versus Cancer Challenge while The Trinity Tigers won the Trip Sports Thanksgiving Tournament. Numerous other conference teams were action as well.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin had the week
off for Thanksgiving. The ‘Roos, currently 1-2, return to the
court December 1 when it hosts Dallas Christian for a 7 p.m.
tip-off. Austin will then begin Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference play when the ‘Roos host Southwestern on Friday
December 5 at 6 p.m. and then Trinity on December 7 at 1
p.m.
Birmingham-Southern (3-2) dropped a tough one
Tuesday night, 72-68, to the Rhodes College (2-1) Lynx. The
loss was the first in Bill Battle Coliseum for the Panthers this
season. The Panthers were led by Nathan West, from the bench,
with 17 points, two assists, and two steals. Aaron
Parr turned in another solid performance with 14 points, and Austin
Thames rounded out the Panthers in double-figures with
ten. Dominic Whicher added nine points and added a
team-high six rebounds. BSC was off for the Thanksgiving
holiday, but will return to Bill Battle Monday night to host
Otterbein College at 7:00 p.m.
No. 13 Centre took last week off and will return
to action Monday against Berea College at home. The Colonels will
also open league play at Sewanee Friday and Oglethorpe Sunday.
Centre is currently 2-1 this season having played three two-point
games.
Colorado College dropped its
sixth consecutive game, but the last five were against Division II
members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Sophomore guard
Nick Rose and sophomore forward Brady Ohlsen combined for 56 points
against Western State College. Rose scored a career-high 30 points,
making eight of 10 three-point attempts to finish within one of
CC's single-game record shared by six players. He went over the
20-point plateau for the second time this season and third time in
his career. Rose began the tournament with 12 points in a 91-51
loss to Mesa State. Ohlsen had a career-high 26 points against the
Mountaineers, eclipsing the 20-point mark for the third time this
year and fourth time overall. Senior guard Lance Jacobs led CC with
17 points against Mesa State. Colorado College will face Johnson
& Wales University in Denver on Tuesday night before beginning
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action next weekend.
DePauw evened its
record at 2-2 after capturing their fifth straight Mike Rokicki
Community Versus Cancer Challenge. DePauw opened play with a 92-57
win over Earlham on Saturday as Mike Moore paced the Tigers with
26, while Joe Bergfeld dropped in a career-high 14 and Tom Callen
and Steve Lemasters each followed with 11. Callen led DePauw with
six rebounds as the Tigers held a 35-20 advantage on the boards.
DePauw hit 59.6 percent from the floor including 9-of-18 from
three-point range. In the title game, DePauw handed Ohio Northern
its first loss four tries after a 73-64 win. David Gray and Callen
each notched career-high point totals with 20 and 16, respectively,
while Moore added 19. Callen hauled down eight boards in the win.
Gray was named the tournament MVP and Moore to the all-tournament
team.
Hendrix junior forward Michael Bertrand and senior
forward Andrew King scored 17 and 14 points, respectively, while
junior guard Cal Rose added 13 points to the mix in the Warriors'
76-62 win over University of Dallas on Tuesday night at the Maher
Center. Hendrix improves to 3-1 with the win. The
Warriors never trailed in their sixth-straight victory over the
Crusaders. Hendrix junior guard Janson Hightower dished out a
season-high five assists. Bertrand and King paced the squad with
six and five rebounds, respectively. King blocked a pair of shots
in the contest.
Millsaps (1-4) had
two strong performances in its home opener this last weekend. The
Majors hung tough, but ultimately fell to the Wesley College
Warriors in the first home game of the season by the score of
59-52. The Majors were able to get to within one point twice in the
game, but could not get the go-ahead bucket. Senior Russell Booth
was the lone Major in double figures, scoring a career-high 15
points to go along with nine rebounds and a pair of blocks. Cameron
Varnado and Blake Martinez were both able to notch eight points
apiece in the contest. Millsaps came roaring back to pick up its
first victory of a young 2008 season as five Majors were able to
reach double figures in the 92-79 win over Rust College. Leading
the way was junior Blake Martinez who had a career-high 23 points
on 7-of-13 shooting. The Majors will continue a five-game home
stand on Tuesday, Dec. 2, welcoming Huntingdon to town for a
non-conference affair. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in the Hangar
Dome.
Oglethorpe had a busy week, going 2-1 in three
contests. The team suffered their first loss, an 87-81 setback at
the hands of Emory University, last Tuesday night. The Petrels
rebounded, however, to win both of their weekend games in the
Georgia Basketball Coaches Association Thanksgiving Classic hosted
by Oglethorpe. On Friday, the Petrels outlasted Maryville College,
77-75, with sophomore Todd Ward hitting a jumper with 1.2 seconds
left to lift Oglethorpe. On the night, Ward posted 20 points, 6
rebounds and 4 assists to lead all five starters in double-figures.
On Saturday, the Petrels beat LaGrange 90-71. Oglethorpe was led by
the stellar play of junior point guard David Allison who connected
on 8 of 13 shots for a game-high 25 points and 6 assists. With the
victories, Oglethorpe moves to 5-1 on the season and will get set
to host both DePauw and Centre this weekend in conference
action.
Rhodes captured a 72-68 road victory against
Birmingham Southern College on November 25. The victory was the
second straight for Rhodes against Birmingham Southern in Bill
Battle Coliseum. Rhodes defeated Birmingham Southern last season
65-63 in overtime. On the game, the Lynx placed three players
in double digit scoring. Cory Smith had a game high 31 points,
Ollie with 18 and Kilpatrick with 16. Rhodes out rebounded
Birmingham Southern 41-35 for the game including 15 offensive
rebounds. Kilpatrick led the Lynx with 12 rebounds. His
double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds are a collegiate first
for the freshman. Rhodes is back in action on Monday, December 1st,
as they travel to Elsah, Illinois to play Principia. Rhodes is back
in action at home on December 6th, as they host the Crusaders of
the University of Dallas. Tipoff is set for 3 pm in Mallory
gymnasium.
Sewanee went to LaGrange on Tuesday night and
after a 20-0 run to close the first half, the visiting Tigers got
the eventual 74-65 win to move to 1-4 on the year and earn new
coach Bubba Smith his first win as Sewanee's head coach. Bradley
Pierson led the Tiger scoring with 23 points. Pierson is averaging
19 ppg this season. The Tigers will host Otterbein on Tuesday
before opening SCAC play this weekend against Centre and
DePauw.
Southwestern moved to 3-1 with a solid team win
over Hardin-Simmons University on Tuesday night. The Pirates touted
a high powered offense shooting 41.8 percent from the field and 50
percent from behind the arc. Four Pirates recorded double digit
points in the 91-79 win over the Cowboys. Southwestern was led by
junior Travis Barber who scored 23 points on 7-15 shooting
including 4-7 from three point-range. He also led the team in
rebounds (9), steals (4), and blocks (1). Next up the Pirates will
take on the University of Dallas on Tuesday night at home before
opening up conference play with an away weekend at Austin College
on Friday and Colorado College on Saturday.
Trinity improved to 4-1 on the season with three wins last
week, highlighted by an 81-71 victory over 10th-ranked University
of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday. Following Tuesday's win, the
Tigers took part in the Trip Sports San Antonio Shootout at Trinity
University, defeating Olivet College 63-61 in overtime on
Thanksgiving night, then downing Whitman College 71-61 on Saturday.
B.J. Moon led four Trinity players in double figures with 17 points
against Mary Hardin-Baylor, while Luke Caldarera and Charles
Houston combined for 26 points and 18 rebounds. Against
Olivet, Caldarera had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the team -
including the game-winning shot with three seconds left in
overtime. Houston then had his third double-double of the
year with 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Tigers to a win
over Whitman. Trinity will open SCAC play this weekend at Colorado
College and Austin College. Last season, the Tigers defeated
both teams in San Antonio to open conference play. Patrick
Robinson led Trinity with 18 points in an 87-60 win over Austin
College, then Moon and Houston scored 14 points each in a 59-40 win
over Colorado College.
