SUWANEE, Ga. - The Southwestern University Pirates opened up the season in impressive fashion. The Pirates' Nick Caputo was 7-of-11 from beyond the arc and scored 24 points in Southwestern's 75-68 upset of #10 Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Elsewhere around the SCAC, the Trinity Tigers nearly pulled a top-10 upset of their own. However, #6 Wisconsin-Stevens Point hung on to defeat the Tigers 71-70 in overtime.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin had its home
opener for the 2008-2009 season when the ‘Roos hosted the
annual Bob Mason Classic in Sherman, taking on East Texas Baptist
and Hardin-Simmons over the weekend. Against ETBU, the
‘Roos got off to a rough start offensively shooting 24% in
the first half before trying to stage a second half comeback,
ultimately coming up short in a 79-65 loss. Kola Alade scored
all 16 of his points in the second half, hitting 7-of-17 shots from
the field. Kyle Lintelman added 11 points in the loss, while
Chris Sturtevant had nine points, eight boards and four
assists. The 'Roos got out to an 11-0 lead against
Hardin-Simmons on Saturday and never looked back, cruising past the
Cowboys 79-56. Alade had another big game, scoring 19 points
and handing out a career-high 11 assists while adding seven
rebounds.
Birmingham-Southern posted a 1-1 week moving them
to 3-1 on the season. BSC traveled to LaGrange on Wednesday,
falling to the Panthers 65-59 before returning home on Friday night
and defeating Emory University 70-64 at Bill Battle Coliseum. BSC
played Wednesday night's game with LaGrange without Aaron Parr.
Parr, BSC's leading scorer and last week's SCAC Player of the Week,
sprained his ankle against Huntingdon College and was unable to
play until Friday's game. The Panthers were able to get back
on the winning track on Friday at home against Emory. The Panthers
were led by Dominic Whicher with 15 points, including one from
beyond the arc. Aaron Parr added 14 points and six assists while
Roger Williams came off the bench with 12 points in 19 minutes. The
Panthers will host the Rhodes College Lynx on Tuesday night at Bill
Battle. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
No. 13 Centre split a pair of two-point games on
the week, defeating Maryville 73-71 before falling 65-63 to
Transylvania. After Maryville tied the game at 71 apiece, the
Colonels raced down the court and hit the game-winning shot as time
expired to post their second straight two-point road victory.
Centre then had its 25-game regular season winning streak snapped
in its home opener against Transylvania over the weekend, missing a
last second shot to tie the game. The Colonels are now 2-1 on the
season, having played three-straight two-point games to open the
season.
Lance Jacobs scored a career-high 25 points, but Adams State
College used its size and depth to post an 85-72 victory over
Colorado College on Friday night in the Bankers
Classic in Alamosa, Colo. Jarrell Sweet had 19 points and a
career-high nine assists for CC, Nick Rose had 15 points and a
team-high seven rebounds and Brady Ohlsen reached double-figure
points for the third consecutive game with 10. On Saturday against
Division II Chadron State College, The Tigers had four players
finish with double-figure points, but CC still came out on the
short end of an 82-61 decision. Ohlsen had a game-high 16 points
and eight rebounds. Nick Rose reached double figures for the fourth
consecutive game with 13 points, while Jacobs and Sweet added 11
and 10 points, respectively. Colorado College will play the third
of five consecutive games against Division II opponents when the
Tigers travel to Regis University on Tuesday night.
DePauw opened the
season with a pair of losses at the Wabash College Little Giant
Tipoff Tournament as they fell to Franklin by a 75-61 score in the
opening game and dropped a 57-52 decision to Wabash in the
third-place contest. Against Franklin, Tom Callen and Gray each
scored 13 for the Tigers, while Sean Haseley grabbed eight
rebounds. In the Wabash contest, Callen and Mike Moore each scored
14 to lead the Tigers, while Callen added 12 rebounds for the
double-double and a spot on the all-tournament team. With his
basket with 15:40 left, Moore became the 23rd player in school
history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
Hendrix went 2-0 over the weekend at the Rhema
College Tip-Off Classic. The Warriors defeated Westminster College,
86-53, on Friday before taking down host Rhema College, 79-67, on
Saturday. Hendrix improved to 2-1 with the successful
weekend. Hendrix junior guard Cal Rose was 4-of-7 from behind
the arc and tallied a game-high 22 points, while junior forward
Michael Bertrand posted a double-double in the Warriors' win over
Westminster (Mo.). Rose was 8-of-14 from the field and 2-of-2 from
the charity stripe. Bertrand posted 14 points and pulled down 13
rebounds on the night, while senior forward David Foley added
another 14 points to the mix. Junior guard Janson Hightower and
senior forward Andrew King dished out four assists apiece. King
picked up his second double-double of the year with his performance
Saturday night. Foley tallied a game-high 21 points and seven
rebounds against the Eagles.
Millsaps (0-3)
continues to inch closer and closer to their first win of the year,
just being inches away in their losses to Louisiana College 57-65
and Loyola New Orleans 54-57. Sophomore forward Chris Ingle had a
solid showing in his hometown of Louisiana by leading all scorers
for the Majors with his 27 points and 14 boards. Fellow bayou
natives Blake Martinez with 21 points and Chad Songy with his 21
points both had solid offensive outings. The team will host its
first home game of the year on Thursday as they take on Wesley
College at 7 p.m. That game can be seen live on the internet at

Oglethorpe won the Equinox Classic this past
weekend in Philadelphia by earning victories over Haverford College
and Swarthmore College. Friday night's victory over Haverford was
particularly thrilling as sophomore Alex Richey beat the buzzer
with a stick-back lay-up for a 69-67 win. The following night, the
Petrels had a much easier time dispatching Swarthmore en route to a
93-70 victory on The Garnet's home floor to claim the Equinox
Classic. The game on Friday versus Haverford proved to be a
back-and-forth affair that the Petrels were able to persevere for
the win. All five starters hit for double figures, led by 18 apiece
for sophomores Todd Ward and Alex Richey. David Allison posted 16
points and Wade Weldon and Joe Kennedy each hit for 10 points to
claim the Equinox Classic. At 3-0, the Petrels will travel cross
town to face Emory on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
Rhodes opened the season in the Rhema College
Tipoff Classic in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma over the weekend. The Lynx
opened the season with a 79-74 victory over host Rhema. On the
second day, the Lynx couldn't overcome cold shooting, losing to
Westminster (Mo.) 68-57. The Lynx were led by three seniors in the
victory. Rob Bledsoe recorded his first collegiate double-double
scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Cory Smith scored a
team high 27 points and Dean Shroyer added 18 points including
going 4 of 5 from beyond the arc. Freshman Kory Kilpatrick grabbed
10 rebounds in his first collegiate start. Rhodes won the
rebounding advantage grabbing 44 total rebounds. Rhodes gets back
into action on Tuesday night versus as they travel to Birmingham,
Alabama to face Birmingham Southern College in a 5 pm tipoff.
Sewanee hosted the 14th annual Lon Varnell
Invitational this weekend and fell to Rust College and Mississippi
College on Friday and Sunday, with Miss. College topping Rust in
the neutral game on Saturday. The Tigers are 0-4 and will play at
LaGrange on Tuesday night. Bradley Pierson leads the Tigers with 72
points in four games - good for an 18 ppg average. Kenton Coleman
scored a season and career high 19 points on Sunday in a close
struggle with the Choctaws.
Southwestern opened the season on Tuesday night
against nationally ranked Mary Hardin Baylor. The Pirates notched
an upset victory over the #10 Crusaders. The Pirates outlasted the
Crusaders and were lifted by the bench player of Sophomore Nick
Caputo. Caputo shot 64% (7-11) from beyond the arc and scored 24
points in 26 minutes. Friday marked the opening games of the
Trinity/Southwestern Classic in San Antonio, Texas where the
Pirates took on another nationally ranked team in #6 University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Pirates lost the game by fifteen,
74-59. Senior Andrew McDonald led Southwestern scorers with 11
points. Southwestern rebounded on Saturday with a 58-41 win over
Schreiner University. Southwestern was lead by Juniors Travis
Barber and Zach Bergstrom who scored 15 and 10 points
respectively.
Trinity opened its season with the Trinity/Southwestern
Tip-Off Classic last weekend, finishing 1-1 overall in the
tournament. Trinity defeated Schreiner 77-66 behind a solid
double-double performance from Charles Houston, who led the team
with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Luke Caldarera came off the bench
with 13 points, while B.J. Moon chipped in with 10 points and four
assists. Houston hit 6-11 from the field and also had five steals
in the win. In Saturday's game against sixth-ranked UW-Stevens
Point, Trinity may have garnered some national attention by taking
the Pointers to the limit. The Tigers lost 71-70 in overtime,
narrowly missing out on the upset. Caldarera scored 15 points off
the bench - including a buzzer-beater in regulation that sent the
game into overtime. Houston finished with another double-doubles,
scoring 13 points and grabbing 15 rebounds to go with five more
steals. Caldarera and Houston were both selected to the
All-Tournament Team for their performances. Houston's 15 rebounds
on Saturday were a career-high.
