SCAC Volleyball Week 9 Recap - Seeds all set for 2008 SCAC Volleyball Championship Tournament

SUWANEE, Ga. - With the completion of the SCAC East/Central Divisional hosted by Sewanee-The University of the South October 25-26, the 2008 SCAC Volleyball Championship Tournament seeds have been settled. The seeds are as follows: #1 Southwestern University, #2 Trinity University, #3 Colorado College, #4 DePauw University, #5 Austin College, #6 Rhodes College, #7 Centre College, #8 Millsaps College, #9 Hendrix College, #10 Oglethorpe University and #11 Sewanee-The University of the South.

The Austin College volleyball team went 4-0 over the weekend as they hosted the Austin College Invitational, topping Ouachita Baptist University, the University of Dallas, Randolph-Macon College and Ripon College to improve to 21-11 overall this season. With the wins, the 'Roos reached the 20-win mark for the 11th consecutive season. The 'Roos opened the weekend with a pair of 3-1 wins over Ouachita and Dallas and added 3-0 victories over both Randolph-Macon and Ripon on Saturday. Jordan Anderton had an outstanding weekend for Austin College, averaging 12.79 assists-per-game and adding 1.71 digs-per-game. Damaris Orasanu had a strong weekend as well, averaging 4.00 kills-per-game with a .394 hitting percentage. Rose also had a team-best six aces over the weekend.  Delia Mercer boasted a .400 hitting percentage to lead the 'Roos and Chitra Kavouspour added averages of 3.64 digs and 1.64 kills-per-game.  Next up for the 'Roos is a tri-match at the University of Texas-Tyler.
  
Birmingham-Southern went 4-0 this weekend, extending its winning streak to 14 matches with wins over Centre College, DePauw University, Hendrix College, and Sewanee, all by the score of 3-0. The Panthers finish out the season on the road this weekend at the Emory National Challenge in Atlanta, Ga., facing Lee University, No. 2 Emory, and No. 1 Juniata, Friday and Saturday.

Centre split its SCAC matches over the weekend played at Sewanee.  Losing to Birmingham-Southern and Rhodes and winning against Millsaps and Sewanee.  The 2-2 split puts Centre at 5-8 on the year in the SCAC and gives them the 7th seed for the conference championship at Rhodes in two weeks.  Coming up this week for the Colonels are a dual match on Wednesday night against in-state rival Transylvania University.  This will be Centre's senior night will they will honor 4 year starters Lindsay Smith and Layla Marefat.  Following the match against Transylvania the Colonels will then host their annual Halloween Bash on Saturday where they will play Asbury College, Mount Saint Joseph, and Washington and Lee.

Colorado College improved to 23-9 overall and matched the 1986 and 2006 squads for the seventh-most victories in a single season. CC's 1985 team recorded a 40-10 record before the NCAA placed limits on the amount of contests a team could play. Cornell dropped to 15-13. Sophomore outside hitter Emily Perkins added her 10th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs, while freshman setter Annie Bernacchi had her fourth with 28 assists and 12 digs. In less than two full seasons, Perkins already is tied for No. 13 with Kristina Rogers with 753 career kills and needs just 27 more to tie Sarah Nelson (1994-97) for the 12th place. She also is tied with Stacey Jonker (1990-93) for 19th with 192 career blocks and is No. 21 with 657 career digs. Freshman setter Amy Schornack hit .421 with a season-high nine kills on 19 attacks with only one attack error. She also had a match-high three service aces. Senior libero Lainie Sherson moved past Kristina Rogers (2001-04) into fifth place on CC's career digs list with 1,088.

DePauw wrapped up SCAC regular season play by winning all three conference matches after dropping the first to Birmingham-Southern. Loren Sloan paced the Tigers with 35 kills (2.7/set), while Adrienne Cobb totaled 33 (2.5/s) and led with 17 blocks (1.3/s). Ali Smith led with 129 assists (9.9/s), while Kristen Chynoweth totaled six aces (0.5/s) and Emily Smith had 64 digs (4.92/s). The Tigers improved to 22-11 overall and finished SCAC play at 11-4 earning the number four seed for the conference tournament.

The Hendrix College volleyball team split its four games in the SCAC Crossover Tournament this weekend with a pair of wins over Sewanee and Oglethorpe on Saturday and a pair of losses to Birmingham Southern and DePauw on Sunday. The Warriors tallied a 3-1 victory over Oglethorpe in its first match of the conference crossover tournament before defeating host Sewanee, 3-0, in the nightcap. Warriors' first year middle blocker Francis Bowen led the team with 15 kills, while sophomore libero Sara Gawor collected a team-best 21 digs and first year setter Ashley Skinner dished out a team-high 24 assists.  In the Warriors second 3-0 win over Sewanee, junior outside hitter Becca Clancy paced Hendrix with seven kills.  Skinner added 13 assists and Gawor made nine digs. Warriors' junior middle blocker Leah Groat blasted three aces and three blocks in the tilt. Birmingham Southern handed the Warriors their first loss on Sunday 8-25, 9-25 and 13-25.  Hendrix then suffered a 15-25, 13-25 and 21-25 defeat to the Tigers.  Clancy led the team with 13 kills on the day, while Skinner dished out a team-high 18 assists against DePauw.

Millsaps (14-21, 4-11) had another tough outing in the SCAC East/Central Cross-Divisional hosted by Sewanee, losing three very close matches to Centre, DePauw and Rhodes. The only win for the volleyball team came in the 3-1 victory over Oglethorpe University. Leading the way over the weekend was sophomore Kate Hall who had 40 kills, 16 digs and six aces.  Freshman Maggie Tumminello had 33 kills in the tournament to go along with 53 digs. The ladies continue their road stretch on Oct. 31, as they head down to New Orleans to take on Dillard University.  They then go on to face Spring Hill College Nov. 1 before the conference tournament opens on Nov. 7 at Rhodes College.

The Oglethorpe University volleyball team was 1-5 in matches played this past week. The Petrels were able to split two matches during senior night last Wednesday, defeating Brewton Parker, 3-2 and falling to Clark Atlanta, 3-1. Oglethorpe will be saying goodbye to dedicated seniors Sharaya Tuttle and Mallory Thomson. The Petrels were swept in four contests on the weekend in the SCAC Cross in Jackson, Mississippi losing by the same 3-1 score to Hendrix, Rhodes and Millsaps and falling, 3-0 to DePauw. At 10-26 on the season, Oglethorpe will get ready for the SCAC Tournament in Memphis. 

Rhodes found its winning form after taking a weekend off. The Lynx went 4-0 in the final divisional before the conference tournament. The Lynx opened up the weekend with victories against Oglethorpe and Sewanee. In their opening match on Day 1 against Oglethorpe match, Claire Warren and Katherine Delavan combined for 21 kills while Kayla McCrury added 21 digs. Against Sewanee both Claire Warren and Katherine Delavan had 8 kills apiece. Coach Sam Lambert picked up her 200th coaching victory (all at Rhodes) with the team's win against Sewanee. On Day 2, the team picked right off where they left off. In their first match against Millsaps, the team's outsides continued their dominance combining for 24 kills. Katherine Delavan also added 20 digs while Libero Kayla McCrury led the team with 23 digs. In their final match of the tournament, the Lynx swept the Colonels in three straight. Setter Laura Jensen had 30 assists while Middle Blocker Stephanie Parazak added  9 kills, 3 blocks and 2 service aces.

Sewanee hosted the SCAC Cross-Divisional this weekend and welcomed Hendrix, Oglethorpe, Centre, Millsaps, DePauw, Rhodes and Birmingham-Southern. Senior Brittany Roper was honored on Sunday for senior day. The four-year letter winner had over 70 assists on the weekend. Sewanee is 3-21 and will compete in Memphis at the SCAC Championships in two weeks.

No. 14 Southwestern improved to 28-3 on the season, with a 4-0 record at the Austin College Invitational. The Pirates started the weekend with 3-0 wins over Division III opponents Ripon College from Wisconsin and regionally ranked Randolph-Macon from Virginia. Saturday, the team battled back for 3-2 victory over Division II Ouachita Baptist followed by a strong 3-0 win over NAIA Paul Quinn. Several athletes contributed strong performance for Southwestern. Junior libero, Samantha Lingamfelter, contributed from the back court with 56 digs (4.67 per game) and 9 aces. Middle blockers Lauren Brown and Lindsay Thompson combined for 61 kills and 23 blocks while recording hitting percentages of 0.349 and 0.409 respectively.  Danielle Bochat had 23 kills and 33 digs while Wigington came off the bench to add 22 kills and 17 digs. Southwestern will finish the regular season with five home matches this week included regional opponents Concordia (Texas) and University of Dallas as well as scholarship programs Texas Wesleyan and St. Thomas (Texas).

No. 11 Trinity went 3-1 at its final home tournament of the season, losing only to ninth-ranked Ohio Northern University. The Tigers have now played seven teams currently ranked in the top 15 nationally this season - including three of the top five. Tayler Malloy finished with a stellar .418 hitting percentage to lead the team, and earned All-Tournament honors as a result.  Megan Guest also had another standout tournament as the team's libero, averaging 4.57 digs/game for a team-high total of 64 over the weekend. Trinity will wrap up the regular season with a single match on Friday, October 31, against UT-Brownsville.  The Tigers will then travel to Memphis, Tennessee for the SCAC Championships Tournament at Rhodes College.  Trinity will enter the tournament as the number two seed.
