SUWANEE, Ga. - Fifth ranked Millsaps College earned a share of the SCAC championship and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs with a 56-27 win at No. 14 Trinity. The Majors' win snapped a 37-game conference home winng streak dating back to 1995.

Austin College saw its four game win streak come to a halt on Saturday in their final homegame of the season, a heartbreaking 31-28 loss to DePauw University that dropped the ‘Roos to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on the year. The 'Roos got out to an early lead when Scooter Means capped off a nine play, 80 yard drive with a tough eight yard run midway through the first quarter, but DePauw scored 21 straight to make it 21-7 early in the third quarter. Austin College fought back with a 49 yard touchdown run by Zach Mamot, his seventh touchdown of the season, but the Tigers responded three minutes later with another touchdown to push it to a 28-14 game. The 'Roos tried for a fourth quarter rally with Andy Braly tossing touchdown passes of 17 yards to Ed Amerson and five yards to Ross Hasten, but in between those scores the Tigers got a 38 yard field goal that proved to be the difference in the game. Braly completed 13-of-25 passes for 162 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions and added 71 yards on 16 carries. Mamot rushed for 91 yards on six carries and Evan Coachman had a career day receiving with eight catches for 100 yards. Andy Stowe led the defense with 10 tackles and Matt Finke blocked his third field goal of the season. The 'Roos get a bye this week before closing out the season at Trinity on November 15.
Birmingham-Southern broke a six-game losing streak this weekend with its 31-17 road win against Colorado College, Saturday. Sophomore running back Walter Arrington recorded three of the Panthers' four touchdowns, and sophomore running back David Langston broke the record for yards in a single rush with an 80-yard touchdown. Senior kicker Raymond Josof was also impressive, hitting a 22-yard field goal and making all four PAT attempts in the game. The Panthers are at home for their next two games to close out the season, facing Sewanee this Saturday for Homecoming at 1:30 p.m. CT, and Millsaps, Nov. 15, at noon, both at the brand new on-campus Panther Stadium.
Centre threw for a season-low 63 yards through the air, but gained a season-high 211 yards on the ground in a 23-15 SCAC road win over Rhodes. The 211 yards are the most by a Centre team since a 41-10 win over LaGrange College back on November 4, 2006. The Colonels also forced three more turnovers - two interceptions and one fumble recovery - to extend its consecutive game streak of forcing at least one turnover to 39 games. Centre will return home Saturday, Nov. 8 to host Trinity University.
Colorado College Junior safety Brendan Ross had a game-high 12 tackles (six solo and six assisted) against Birmingham-Southern. It was sixth fourth career game with double figures tackles and his second of the season. Ross leads the team with 37 solo and 58 total tackles. Three of CC's senior linebackers now rank among the top 15 in career solo and total tackles. Brian Mulhern is No. 9 with 236 total tackles, while Josh Underwood is No. 13 with 223 and Buddy Ferreira is No. 15 with 195. Mulhern is No. 10 with 115 solo stops, while Underwood is No. 11 with 114 and Ferreira is tied for No. 13 with 92. Senior quarterback Jon McDonald threw a pair of touchdown passes to give him 25 for his career. Sophomore wide receiver Andrew Conarroe scored his first touchdown on a 32-yard strike from McDonald. It also was his longest reception of the season. Freshman running back Luke Northam caught his second TD pass of the season on a 13-yard pass form McDonald.
DePauw scored twice in the final five minutes of the first half and on its first two second-half possession on the way to a 31-28 win at Austin. Spud Dick completed 21 of 33 passes for 319 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions and became DePauw's all-time total offense leader. With his 321 total yards, Dick pushed his career total to 5,978 which broke the school record of 5,754 held by Jeff Voris (1986-89). Dick's 5,982 career passing yards are just 53 shy of Voris' school-record 6,035. Jon Ellis rushed for 82 yards on 23 carries and caught three passes for 131 yards for 213 all-purpose yards. His 97-yard reception from Dick in the second quarter tied the contest at 7-7. Chris Gasbarra caught five for 50 yards, while Brayden Dahlstrom and Koors finished with three each. Tarren Collins led the DePauw defense with eight tackles, while Stacy Crawford, Marc Hoeppner and Huffman each had seven. Crawford and Valdiserri each finished with two pass breakups. The DePauw defense posted two goal line stands in the win.
No. 4 Millsaps (8-0, 6-0 SCAC) clinched the automatic qualifier into the playoffs and at least a share of the 2008 SCAC Title in a 56-27 statement win at 14th-ranked Trinity on Saturday. The win also snapped a 37-game home conference winning streak for the Tigers dating back to 1995. Oliver Galicki, Andres Wallace, Jordan Granville, John Shivers and Adam Williams paved the way for a season-high 576 total yards of offense and Millsaps dropped the most points on host Trinity (Texas) in the SCAC era. Senior All-American hopeful Juan Joseph completed 30-of-43 passes for 370 yards and three TDs and also rushed for 91 yards and two more scores, becoming the first Millsaps QB in the SCAC era to defeat Trinity twice in his career. Millsaps won its 10th straight game dating back to last year's "Mississippi Miracle" loss while sending 14th-ranked TU to its first loss of the 2008 season after opening the year at 7-0. Behind Joseph's stellar afternoon Eric McCarty caught nine balls for 115 yards and a score, Michael Galatas caught four for 82 yards and a score, Raymece Savage grabbed six for 49 yards and Shane Bowser grabbed four for 56 yards and a score. Defensively for Millsaps, Lee Klein had a team high eight tackles, Denarold Anderson had seven tackles, 2.0 TFL and a sack and Jacob Hanberry had seven tackles, two breakups and a key interception in the fourth quarter. The Majors will return to Jackson this weekend for a Homecoming showdown with Colorado College, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. Before kickoff, 20 Millsaps seniors will be recognized in addition to halftime festivities.
Rhodes continues to lead the SCAC in several
defensive categories. Currently the Lynx lead the SCAC in total
defense (260.4 ypg) , rushing defense (107 ypg) passing defense
(153.4) and sacks (25). Senior linebacker Mason Mosby leads the
league in tackles per game (13.9) and forced fumbles (3). Desmond
Hendricks leads the SCAC in sacks (8.5) and tackles for Loss
(17.5). Senior cornerback Tom Oliver leads the league in punt
returns, averaging 12.9 yards a return. Junior cornerback Brandon
Valentine leads the SCAC in kickoff returns with 20 returns for 455
yards and a 22.8 average. Lynx senior running back Charles Hoggard
is third in the SCAC with 571 yards rushing in 8 games for an
average of 71.8 yards per game. Junior running back Josh
McMurray is now 8th in the SCAC in rushing with 433 yards for a
54.1 yards average per game. The Lynx go on the road for their
final two contests, this week traveling to Greencastle, Ind. to
face DePauw.
Sewanee had the weekend off. The Panthers travel
to Birmingham, Ala. to square off against the Birmingham-Southern
Panthers. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. In last season's contest,
the Panthers dealt the Tigers a 35-33 setback. Sewanee (2-6, 1-5
SCAC) enters the game after a 27-13 loss on October 25 to then 14th
ranked Trinity University. In that game the Panthers were led by
running backs Patrick Shelton and Trey Reliford as both scored
touchdowns in the loss. Trinity limited Sewanee to just 254 total
yards of offense. However, Sewanee quarterbacks completed passes to
seven different receivers.
No. 16 Trinity lost a 56-27 game to unbeaten Millsaps College on Saturday afternoon at E.M. Stevens Stadium. The loss snaps Trinity's 37-game home winning streak against SCAC opponents, and is the first home loss to a Division III team since the 1995 season. Trinity, ranked eighth in last week's AFCA national poll, stayed within 15 points into the fourth quarter, but the Majors, ranked fourth in the latest D3football.com poll, scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to finish off the win. Caleb Urban led Trinity with 53 yards rushing, also catching three passes for 46 yards and returning five kickoffs for a total of 106 yards. It was the second game of the year in which Urban had 100 or more yards of kickoff returns. Bryant Wilson completed 18-31 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns, but two interceptions in the second half led to two scores for Millsaps. Chris Coleman and Riley Curry caught five passes each, totaling 125 yards receiving in the game. The Tigers travel to Centre College this weekend for the final road game of the regular season. Trinity is 13-6 against Centre in conference play, which includes a seven-game winning streak. Centre's last win was a 25-21 decision in Danville, Kentucky, during the 2000 season. Last year, Trinity won 34-6 over the Colonels.
