JACKSON, Miss. --  Millsaps College athletic director Tim Wise announced today the hiring of Luke Beam, who will become the Majors' first head men's lacrosse coach in school history. Beam will officially assume his new post on August 1.

Millsaps will begin competition in the spring of 2011 for both men and women.

"I am excited about this amazing opportunity to build upon the existing traditions of academic and athletic greatness at Millsaps College," Beam said. "The more I get to know the Millsaps family, the more I realize what a truly special place it is."

Beam joins the Millsaps staff from DeSales University in Center Valley, Pa., where he spent three seasons as the assistant coach from 2006 to 2008 and primarily served as the defensive coordinator. Beam was a part of the longest winning streak in program history. In addition, Beam worked part-time in the residence life department as a residence hall director, where he met his fiancée Marcie.

Prior to his three-year stint at DeSales, Beam spent one season as an assistant coach at Belmont Abbey College, where the first year program boasted a 6-6 record in 2006 and was named the Deep South Conference Coaching Staff of the Year.

A 2003 graduate of Messiah College with a bachelor of science in history, Beam spent his playing days at a variety of defensive positions for the Falcons. He was part of one Middle Athletic Conference (MAC) championship, which resulted in the school's first-ever NCAA appearance in men's lacrosse.
