SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Trinity University
Tigers beat the Maryville (Tenn.) College Scots 68-64 Thursday in
the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball
Tournament in Sams Gym. Box
Score
Trinity (24-4) will host the University of Texas-Dallas Comets
(24-4) at 7 p.m. Saturday in the NCAA second round. The Comets had
a first-round bye. Maryville concluded its season with a 20-7
record.
The Tigers led 28-27 at halftime and outscored the Scots 16-5 at
the beginning of the second half, to lead 44-32, with 14:23 left in
the game. Tiger senior forward Jonathan Lewis of
The Woodlands, Texas (Oak Ridge), scored all eight
of his points in this Trinity run. Lewis also pulled in six
rebounds. The Scots rallied and tightened the score to 44-38, with
13:06 remaining, but got no closer than four points.
Trinity senior forward Charles Houston of
Seguin, Texas (Seguin), led the team with 21
point, shooting 7 of 12 from the field. Houston also grabbed seven
rebounds. Senior guard B.J. Moon of San
Antonio (Reagan) added 15 points. Sophomore forward
Luke Caldarera of Katy, Texas
(Taylor), scored six points, but led the game with
10 rebounds and five assists.
Maryville sophomore forward Eryk Watson of Powder Springs, Ga.
(Kennesaw Mountain), led the game with 25 points, hitting 10 of 19
from the field. Junior center Greg Hernandez of Miami (La Salle)
added 15 points and led the Scots with eight rebounds. Freshman
guard Jordan Damron of Maryville scored 12 points.
Maryville shot 39.7 percent (23 of 58) from the field and Trinity
hit 36.9 percent (24 of 65). The Tigers had a slight 40-37 edge in
rebounding.
Trinity, which received an at-large NCAA bid, last qualified for
the tournament in 2006, and lost 83-64 to Maryville in the first
round at Clinton, Miss. Maryville competed in its 11th
consecutive NCAA postseason event.
