DANVILLE, Ky. - Playing through a steady rain and less than ideal conditions, it took two overtime periods and a shootout for Sewanee-University of the South to defeat Hendrix College 3-2 in strokes in an opening round match of the 2008 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament, Friday, Nov. 7, in Danville, Ky. Box Score

With the win, Sewanee improves to 12-6 overall on the season and will advance to one of Saturday's semifinal games to face top-seeded DePauw University. Hendrix ends only its second season of field hockey with a 4-11 record.

The Tigers jumped on the scoreboard first as senior Claiborne Buckingham (Richmond, Va.) scored off a penalty corner for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Carly Grimm (South Salem, N.Y.) had the assist.

The match remained that way into the second half. With 18:29 left to play, freshman Lauren Thorburg (St. Louis, Mo.) scored an unassisted goal for Hendrix to tie the match at one apiece.

Just over four minutes later, sophomore Abby Coleman (North Kingston, R.I.) gave the Warriors their first lead with a goal off a penalty corner. Sophomore Taylor LaFortune (Schertz, Texas) notched the assist and Hendrix led 2-1.

Sewanee sophomore Taylor Skeen (Baltimore, Md.) tied the match again with an unassisted goal with just under six minutes left. Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie and the two teams went to overtime.

After two scoreless overtime periods, the teams went to strokes to decide the winner. Hendrix led 1-0 after the first round, but missed the next three, while the Tigers made all three to win stroke play 3-1.

The Warriors out-shot Sewanee 32-23 and held a 17-11 edge in penalty corners. Sewanee senior Clarkie Crawford (Louisville, Ky.) earned the win in goal for the Tigers. Crawford made 13 saves in the win, while sophomore Alyssa Havens (New Canaan, Conn.) was the tough-luck loser for Hendrix. Havens stopped 10 shots in the defeat.

Tournament play will resume Saturday, Nov. 8 with a pair of semifinal matches. Top-seeded DePauw will play No. 4 seed Sewanee at 11 a.m., followed by No. 2 seed, and host, Centre College playing No. 3 seed Rhodes College at 1:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
