Men's Basketball Recap (Week 13)  - Around The SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - With one weekend left in the regular season, teams are fighting for SCAC tournament berths. The Millsaps Majors earned a much needed weekend sweep of eleventh-ranked Trinity University and Southwestern University and currently sit in fourth-place in the Western Division. Meanwhile, Sewanee secured the fourth and final Eastern Division tournament berth by sweeping Birmingham-Southern and Rhodes Feb. 13 and Feb. 15.

Austin College, Millsaps, Southwestern, and Colorado College are jockeying for the final two Western Division tournament berths. Heading into the final week of the regular season, those four teams are separated by a mere two games.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austinsplit its two games over the week, topping Dallas 55-49 on Wednesday before falling 72-67 to Colorado College on Saturday. Against Dallas, Kola Alade scored seven of his 11 points in the final 1:40 to lift the 'Roos to the victory. Spencer Burke added 10 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots in the win. Against Colorado College, the 'Roos led by one at the half but Colorado College used a late surge to push past Austin College for the five point win. Josh Saunders scored a career high 17 points and Alade added 13 points, 8 rebounds and four assists. Burke had eight points, 12 boards and two blocked shots in the loss.  
 
Birmingham-Southern(10-13) dropped a pair of close calls this week. With 1:07 remaining in Friday's game at Sewanee the game was tied at 52. The Panthers had trailed by as many as seven in the half, but the Panthers could not close the deal. The Tigers ended the game on a 5-0 run to finish 57-52. The Panthers could not overcome a sluggish start in Atlanta on Sunday, falling to the Petrels 72-66. BSC scored just 18 points in the first half, but they stormed back to within a goal with 1:07, again, on the clock. The Panthers have just two games remaining in the 2008-09 campaign. Wednesday the Panthers will host Rust College for a non-conference matchup at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to Memphis on Saturday afternoon to meet the Lynx at 3:00 p.m.
   
No. 17 Centrewon a decisive victory over visiting No. 22 DePauw University, 75-50, this past weekend. With the win the Colonels move in sole possession of first place in the Eastern Division of the SCAC. The Colonels came out of the gate on fire, building an insurmountable 36 point halftime lead. At one point in the second half Centre led DePauw by 41 points. For the game Centre was 28 for 59 from the field (47.5) and shot an impressive 12 for 25 (48.0%) from behind the three-point line. The Colonels out-rebounded the Tigers by 11, 33-22. Centre is now 18-4 on the year, 10-2 in the SCAC with home league games against Sewanee and Oglethorpe up next.

Playing its final home game of the season, Colorado Collegebuilt a 15-point lead and hit the clutch shots in the closing seconds to defeat Austin College, 72-67. The Tigers improved to 5-18 overall, the most victories in a single-season during head coach Andy Partee's three-year tenure. Brady Ohlsen's free throw gave CC a three-point lead with 29 seconds remaining and Austin Perkins sealed the victory with a pair of free throws after he pulled down a rebound with 14 seconds to go. Ohlsen made seven of nine shots from the floor and led the Tigers with 15 points. Nick Rose had 13 points, while Jarrell Sweet added 10. Everyone on the CC roster scored and had at least one rebound. Lance Jacobs needs only 24 points to become the 16th player in the program's history to score 1,000 or more career points. The Tigers dropped a 77-59 decision to the University of Dallas in a non-conference game on Friday. Colorado College, which is still in contention for a spot in the SCAC Tournament, will play its final two games of the regular season at Trinity and Southwestern on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

DePauwsuffered just its second loss in the last 14 games as 23rd-ranked Centre topped the Tigers by a 75-50 score. The Colonels scored the game's first 22 points over the opening 11 minutes and led, 50-14, at halftime. The lead reached as many as 41 in the second half. Mike Moore paced the Tigers with 15 points with Tom Callen adding 10. Moore also led DePauw with six rebounds and hit two three-pointers to tie the DePauw career record of 240 held by Alex Stewart (2002-06). Moore ranks sixth in school history with 1,434 career points and still is second in assists with 531.

Hendrixdropped a pair of overtime games this weekend to Southwestern and Trinity. The Warriors are now 15-9 overall and 8-6 in conference action. Southwestern and Hendrix combined for 13 ties and 13 lead changes and took 45 minutes of action to decide the victor on Friday night.  The Pirates pulled out the overtime win, 78-65, over the Warriors in front of a raucous crowd.  Southwestern used a time out with 2.8 seconds remaining to draw up a last-second play and junior guard Anthony Cox drained the fade away 3-pointer to send the contest to overtime. The Pirates rode their wave of momentum into the extra minutes and held the Warriors to just four points in overtime. Hendrix dropped its second-straight overtime loss to No. 11 Trinity, 71-67, on Saturday. Trinity overpowered Hendrix on the glass 47-29 on the night. The Warriors out hustled their opponent in the opening period by scoring 13 points off the Tigers' nine turnovers. Michael Bertrand and junior guard Cal Rose were Hendrix's hot hands finishing with 16 and 12 points respectively.

Millsapspicked up a pair of wins it had to have in order to stay alive for a berth in the SCAC Tournament, sweeping 11th-ranked Trinity 86-67 and Southwestern 83-73 to move into fourth in the SCAC West standings at 6-8 and 9-15 overall. As a team Millsaps shot a combined 47 percent from the floor, including 43 percent from 3-point range, hitting 11 3s on Friday and 12 on Sunday. Seniors Chris Sanders and Chad Songy took charge with huge weekends, with Sanders pouring in back-to-back 20-point games for the first time of his career and Songy averaging 15.5 points in two wins. Against SU on Sunday, Sanders scored a career-high 21 points off the bench and three other Majors notched double figures, including Songy with 14 points. Millsaps controls its own destiny next weekend at Hendrix. However, Friday night's games between Southwestern, Austin, Hendrix and Colorado College could determine the Majors' fate the night before their tipoff in Conway, Ark.

Oglethorpeswept its final two regular season home games last weekend. The Stormy Petrels beat Rhodes on Friday, 95-79 and then beat Birmingham-Southern 72-66 on Sunday afternoon. OU sophomore Todd Ward had a monster weekend, averaging a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds in each game. He connected on 21-of-32 shots from the floor for a blistering .656 shooting percentage. The Stormy Petrels close out the regular season February 20 when they travel to DePauw and February 22 traveling to Centre. Game times are set for 6 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.  
  
Rhodesdropped two SCAC road games this weekend to Oglethorpe and Sewanee. Friday night, Rhodes could not overcome a poor shooting night from beyond the arc as they connected on just 9 of 31 three point attempts. Rhodes was led by Cory Smith's season high 35 points. Smith was the lone Lynx performer to shoot well from beyond the arc connecting on 5 of 9 from three point range. Larry Cunningham came off the bench to give the Lynx 11 points. On Sunday the Lynx lost to Sewanee by four points. Rhodes was led by Cory Smith's 25 points and Nate Ollie scored 23 on the game all of them in the second half as he sparked the comeback. Rhodes finishes the season on Saturday, February 21st with a home game versus Birmingham-Southern College. Rhodes will celebrate the senior day.
 
Sewanee men's basketball earned its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend sweep since 2005 with wins over Birmingham-Southern and Rhodes. The Tigers are now 7-16 and 4-8 in the league. The Tigers will play at Centre and DePauw next weekend. Sewanee senior Ben Pursell had 38 points and 23 rebounds on the weekend, logging a 16 and 16 double-double on Friday and leading the Tigers with 22 points on Sunday. The five Sewanee seniors accounted for all but seven of the Tiger points on Sunday for senior day.
 
Southwestern went 1-1 on the week to move to 14-9 overall and 5-8 in the SCAC. On Friday, the Pirates defeated Hendrix, 75-68 in overtime. Sophomore forward Jonathan Brown came off the bench to lead the Pirates with 18 points on 7-11 shooting. Junior Travis Barber recorded his first double-double of the season scoring 12 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. On Sunday, the Pirates out-rebounded Millsaps 33-26, but committed 4 more turnovers in the game which proved costly. Sophomore guard Nick Caputo led the Pirates off the bench with 13 points. Southwestern is currently sitting in fifth place as they head into the final weekend of conference action, hosting Austin on Friday and Colorado College on Sunday.

No. 14 Trinitysalvaged a road weekend split in SCAC play, following Friday night's 86-67 loss to Millsaps with a 71-67 overtime win at Hendrix on Saturday. The Tigers remain atop the SCAC standings with an 11-2 SCAC record.  Trinity is 20-3 overall this season, securing the ninth 20-win season in school history. Six of those have come under head coach Pat Cunningham, who recently won his 350th career game and who is one win away from his 200th victory at Trinity. Charles Houston had 13 points and tied his career high with 15 rebounds in Saturday's overtime win.  He also tallied two steals in the game to tie Jason Morris (2001-05) for Trinity's all-time steals record. Not only is B.J. Moon close to becoming the 14th Trinity player in history to reach 200 career assists, but he is also five steals from becoming the eighth Tiger player to reach 100 in a career. Moon is also just the fourth player to hit 40 or more threes twice in his career. Trinity will host Colorado College and Austin in the final weekend of the regular season on Friday and Saturday nights.
