LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - No. 11 Trinity University opened up its 2013 season in dominating fashion as the Tigers took two of three from Chapman (Calif.) University. Senior lefty Ryan Lucero, who missed much of last season with an injury, took a no-hitter into the eighth and struck out 10 in Trinity's 7-1 season opening win.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College had a tough opening weekend to
their 2013 campaign, falling in each of their four games against
visiting Occidental College. The ‘Roos fell 7-4 and 17-4 on
Saturday before being edged 5-3 and giving up a late lead in an
11-7 loss on Sunday. Marshall Korn had a strong debut on the mound,
going 6.0 innings while surrendering just two earned runs on five
hits with three strikeouts in game one of the weekend series and
freshman Connor Berry was strong in relief, appearing three times
and allowing just six hits over 5.0 innings of work. Todd Takabuki
hit .500 with a triple and two RBI in his one game in the field,
Tyler Appelquist batted .357 with four runs scored, two stolen
bases, and a double, and Austin Vaughan hit .333 with a double and
two RBI.
Centenary will open its season February 8-10 when they
travel to Dallas to square off against East Texas Baptist,
Louisiana College and Willamette, respectively. The Gents begin
their first season in the SCAC in 2013. Centenary will then open up
its 2013 home slate with a double-header against Jarvis Christian
on February 12. Centenary tallied a 24-15 record last year in its
first season since making the transition from Division I to
Division III.
Dallas (0-3) opened their 2013 season with three home
losses to Texas Lutheran University. The Bulldogs prevailed 8-7 and
15-1 in Saturday's 'Opening Day' doubleheader at Crusader Field,
before capping the series Sunday with a 2-1 ten-inning decision. On
the docket this week for head coach Fraser Holmes' squad is a
Tuesday road doubleheader at Howard Payne University followed by a
three-game weekend home series versus Sul Ross State
University.
Southwestern went 1-2 on the week with losses in the
first two games against Schreiner before winning game 3 of the
series. The Pirates struggled defensively throughout the
weekend with 12 errors leading to 11 unearned runs. Schreiner
jumped out to an 8-2 lead after the 4th inning of game 1 before
Southwestern put up two in the 7th to make it a 9-7
game. The game would end with Southwestern loading the bases
but unable to push across any runs. Game 2 was a replay of
game 1 with Schreiner scoring 4 unearned runs off a Southwestern
error in the second. Schreiner would hold a 5-1 lead heading
to the 7th, Southwestern brought the tying run to the
plate after scoring 2 in the 7th but they were unable to
close any more ground losing 5-3. Southwestern finally got in
the Win column in game three of the weekend after overcoming 3 more
errors. The 4th inning was big for the
Pirates scoring 5 runs on 5 hits and a Schreiner error. Cody
Lovas picked up the win on the mound allowing 3 earned runs in 5
innings of work. In all the pitching staff only allowed 7
earned runs in 25 innings of work. The Pirates host
LeTourneau this weekend for a three game set.
No. 11 Trinity opened up the 2013 spring season by
winning two out of three games at Chapman University over the
weekend. The Tigers won 7-1 on both Thursday and Friday, then
suffered an 11-1 loss in the series finale. The win in the season
opener marked the fourth straight time that the team has won its
first contest of the year, dating back to the 2009 season. Trinity
will not play any games this week, but will make a three-game home
stand the following week. The Tigers will host future SCAC member
Schreiner University in the home opener on Tuesday, February 12.
Trinity will host Huston-Tillotson in a Saturday afternoon
doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m. on February 16. That begins a
stretch of 11 home games in the next 13 contests for the
Tigers.
