AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College won its lone match of the week,
with Caleb Sherer tallying in the 28th minute of action to top
Centenary College 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in Shreveport. The
‘Roos are now 7-7-2 overall and 3-5 in Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference play with the victory. The ‘Roos and
Gents both attempted 15 shots in the game but Andrew Celio was able
to keep the clean sheet with four saves in the net for Austin
College. The ‘Roos return home for Homecoming Weekend with
matches against Dallas and Colorado College to close out the
regular season on Friday and Sunday.
Centenary’s (2-12, 0-8) struggles continued last
week, dropping its only match against Austin College, 1-0,
Saturday. The Gents were shut out for the fourth consecutive game
and lost their eighth straight. Centenary breaks from SCAC play to
continue its five-match home stand with a 7 p.m. contest against
Texas College Oct. 23. The Gents host Colorado College (Oct. 26),
University of Dallas (Oct. 28) and Louisiana College (Oct. 30) to
finish the regular season before the SCAC Tournament.
No. 22 Colorado College used a first-half goal
by sophomore forward Hunter Martinez and a stellar performance by
senior goalkeeper Forrest Marowitz to forge a 1-1 tie with No. 1
Trinity. Making only his fourth appearance of the season, Martinez
won possession of sophomore defender Andrew Worthington's long
header just inside the Trinity penalty box, worked his way free 15
yards in front of the left post, and scored his first career goal
on a high shot to the far side. Marowitz made six of his
season-high seven saves in the second half and overtime to preserve
the tie. Senior forward Matt Fechter and sophomore midfielder Alec
Martinez each struck for a pair of goals and set up one other score
in Sunday’s 4-0 victory over Southwestern. Martinez scored
the only goal CC would need in the 18th minute, blasting a high
shot from the left side of the box after taking a feed from
Fechter. It was the first-ever game winner for Martinez, as well as
Fechter's fifth game-winning assist of the season and the eighth of
his career. With his 15th goal of the season, Fechter moved into a
tie with Andy Dorsey (1985-88) for 10th place on the program's
all-time list with 43. Anchored by senior defenders Nick Lammers
and Ben Sandalow, the Tigers recorded their 10th shutout of the
season and held an opponent to just one shot on goal for the third
time this season. Colorado College travels to Centenary College on
Friday, Oct. 26, and Austin College on Sunday, Oct. 28, for its
final games of the regular season.
Dallas (5-7-2, 2-5-1 SCAC) went 0-2 on the week in a pair
of SCAC games to round out their home schedule. Friday brought
Southwestern University to Crusader Field. Leading 2-0 by halftime,
the Pirates captured a 3-0 victory. Alan Castillejos' 51st-minute
tally proved the difference on Sunday in Irving, Texas, as No. 1
Trinity University blanked Dallas 1-0. On tap this week for Coach
Hoffmann's team are three road games to close out the 2012 regular
season -- Dallas Christian College (Tuesday), Austin College
(Friday) and Centenary College of Louisiana (Sunday).
Southwestern split two SCAC games this week to move to
11-7 on the season and 5-4 in the SCAC. Senior Evan Perkins
continued his hot streak of scoring, posting two goals and one
assist as the Pirates defeated the University of Dallas 3-0 on
Friday night. Two first half goals gave SU a comfortable lead and
Matthew Nickell added another in the second half to seal the deal.
On Sunday, Southwestern had two goals called back that killed the
momentum as they fell 4-0 to Colorado College. SU was outshot 27-4
in the match. SU now sits in third place in the SCAC going into
their final weekend of regular season action. They face Trinity on
Wednesday night in San Antonio before playing a non-conference
match with UC Santa Cruz on Sunday.
No. 2 Trinity clinched the SCAC Men’s Soccer
Tournament’s top seed over the weekend, tying Colorado
College 1-1 and defeating the University of Dallas 1-0. The Tigers
improved to 15-0-2 this season and 8-0-1 in SCAC play, tallying 25
total points in the standings to earn the #1 seed with one
conference game remaining. Yuri Ribeiro scored a second-half goal
to tie Friday’s game against Colorado, which eventually led
to the draw. The goal also improved his team lead in scoring,
now totaling 13 goals and seven assists (33 points). On Sunday,
Alan Castillejos scored the game-winner in a 1-0 win against
Dallas, which was his fourth goal in as many games this season.
Trinity finishes off the regular season with two home games this
week. The Tigers close the SCAC schedule by hosting Southwestern
University on Wednesday evening, then take on UC-Santa Cruz on
Friday night.
