GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Trinity University women's tennis
team finished fourth at the ITA Indoor National Championships after
falling 8-1 to third-ranked University of Chicago in Sunday
afternoon's Third Place Match. Match Results | Bracket | Official Website
The Tigers fell to 3-7 on the season with the loss, and lost for the second straight match at the tournament, hosted by DePauw University.
After losing the first doubles point, Trinity rallied with an 8-6 win by Mackenzie Knoop and Thavindra Ekanayake at the top position. The Tigers then fell just short in a 9-8 (7-5) match from Kristy Hamilton and Stephanie Williamson at No. 3 doubles.
Chicago was able to carry that momentum into single play, and the Maroons swept all six matches to earn third place in the tournament. Ekanayake was the only Tiger player to force a third set, rallying to win 6-4 after dropping the opener 3-6. Chicago's Linden Li earned a 6-2 win in the final set, though, which put her team up 5-1 to clinch the match.
Trinity will make its annual road trip to California at the end of next week, facing off against five different opponents over a six-day West Coast stretch. The Tigers take on Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Thursday to open the trip.
