LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Colorado College continued its winning streak as the Tigers won two more games by shutout during the week to win the 14th annual Bill Boddington tournament. Of Colorado College's five wins, four have come via shutout.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College continued its strong start to
the season with a trip to the Midwest to take on Greenville College
and Westminster College, topping Greenville 2-1 and drawing with
Westminster 1-1. Against Greenville, Andy Johnson put the 'Roos on
the board first on a feed from James Saulnier, and after Greenville
had battled back to square things up at the half, the 'Roos got the
game winner from Andrew Parides on assists from Saulnier and Caleb
Sherer. Against Westminster, the 'Roos fell behind early but Caleb
Sherer found Andre Samson for the equalizer and the two teams
battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw.
Centenary finished the week 1-1. Centenary dropped a 2-1
decision at LeTourneau before being rained out against Wiley
College. Nickerson and Centenary closed the week with the 2-1
double OT win at Mayo Field.
Senior forward Matt Fechter was involved in all six goals,
scoring three and assisting on three others, as Colorado
College defeated Fredonia State and Otterbein to win the
14th Annual Bill Boddington Memorial Tournament. Fechter tied his
career-high with three assists and scored the game’s final
goal in a 4-0 victory over FSU on Friday. The Colorado College
defense held its opponent to fewer than 10 total shots for the
third time this season while recording its third shutout. Senior
Forrest Marowitz made one save during 74:34 in goal. Freshman Ian
Horne, who played the final 15:37, also stopped one shot. CC used a
pair of goals from Fechter and a dominating performance by its
defenders to defeat Otterbein University, 2-0, on Sunday. The
Tigers’ defense allowed just six total shots by the
Cardinals, only two of which got through to senior goalkeeper Brian
Graf. It marked the fourth time this season an opponent took fewer
than 10 shots in a game against Colorado College. Fechter struck
for the only goal CC would need in the 29th minute on a penalty
kick after junior midfielder Sean Parham was taken down near the
right post by an Otterbein defender. Colorado College opens SCAC
play next weekend with games at Southwestern University and Trinity
University on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
Dallas (3-1) triumphed to a 1-0 overtime victory Saturday
afternoon over Millsaps in Irving, Texas. In the 94th-minute,
freshman forward Cristian Govea netted his second overtime
game-winning goal of the season. He had previously helped Dallas
sink Concordia University in the team's home-opener. Freshman
midfielder Colton Allen made a long run from the left-back and then
played a perfect cross to Govea, who knocked the ball into the back
of the goal. In the waning minutes of regulation, Govea missed what
would have been a highlight-reel volley off a 30-yard cross from
the freshman defender Luke Christianson. Sophomore center back
James Bernard stopped an open-net shot to preserve the
scoreless-tie late in the second half. Millsaps (1-2) proved a
worthy opponent, consistently pressuring the Crusader defense. The
Majors outshot Dallas, 24-14. James Kerin turned in yet another
stellar performance, as the senior goalkeeper fended of seven shots
on goal to record his third shutout of the season. Dallas begins
conference play on the road on Friday, travelling to San Antonio to
face Trinity at 6 p.m. The team then heads to Georgetown, Texas,
for a 12 p.m. game with Southwestern on Sunday.
Southwestern posted a weekend sweep on its trip to
California, taking down Whittier and Redlands to improve to 5-3 on
the season and move into the regional rankings (7th). The Pirates
had full control of the game against Whittier, scoring early in the
first half and continuing to press to the 5-0 final. Daniel Poole
came up big in goal to keep the shutout intact with eight saves.
Marco Alcocer and Paden Williams both posted two goals in the win
while Evan Perkins had three assists. After such a strong showing
SU turned around to face Redlands and knew they would be in for a
battle. Redlands struck first with a goal in the 30th minute before
Alcocer tied the game just before halftime. With the win in their
sights Southwestern shot out of the gates and went on the attack.
Charlie Berndt scored the game winner in the 67th minute to had SU
the 2-1 win. Southwestern comes home to open SCAC action this
weekend, playing host to Colorado College on Friday evening and the
University of Dallas on Sunday.
No. 1 Trinity went 1-0-1 in a tough road trip to
California over the weekend. The Tigers opened with a 1-1 tie at
the University of Redlands, then handed #17 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
Colleges a 2-0 defeat to finish the week. The Tigers fell behind in
the second half against Redlands, but managed to tie the game
midway through the second period. Neither team was able to break
free in the two overtimes, forcing Trinity’s third draw in
the last two seasons. Against Claremont, Trinity scored a pair of
second-half goals to defeat its nationally-ranked opponent, with
Simon Uribe picking up his first career game-winning goal. Trinity
returns home this weekend to open up SCAC play. The Tigers host the
University of Dallas on Friday, followed by a Sunday afternoon
matchup with Colorado College. Last season, Trinity defeated
Dallas 2-1 on the road, and earned a 2-0 shutout win over Colorado
College in San Antonio.
