LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Top ranked Trinity University extended its winning streak to five matches as the Tigers went a perfect 2-0 during the second week of SCAC play. Trinity beat Centenary, 3-1, before finishing the SCAC sweep with a 5-1 win over Austin College.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College went 1-2 last week, falling 3-1
to Rogers State on Tuesday before splitting with Southwestern and
No. 1 Trinity, topping the Pirates 3-0 before falling 5-1 against
the Tigers. Caleb Walters tallied on an assist from James Saulnier
against Rogers State, but RSU scored twice in the second half to
hand the ‘Roos the loss. Against Southwestern, the
‘Roos scored three times in a 12 minute span in the second
half to earn the win. Saulnier headed home a corner kick from Caleb
Sherer to get things started, followed by an Andy Johnson goal on
assists from Sherer and Joey Alcocer, and Alcocer would add the
final tally on an assist from Memo Allande. Against the Tigers, the
‘Roos got a second half goal from Johnson but were out-shot
32-6 in the game. The ‘Roos are now 6-3-2 overall this season
and 2-1 in conference play.
Centenary (2-7, 0-3 SCAC) finished the week 0-2. Centenary
dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 1 Trinity before falling 2-1 at home
to Southwestern over the weekend. The Gents return to action on
Oct. 5 and 7 when they travel to Dallas and Colorado College,
respectively.
Senior forward Daniel Wright struck for a pair of goals,
including the game winner in the 70th minute, to lead
Colorado College to a 2-1 victory over the
University of Dallas on Friday. It was his team-leading third
game-winning goal of the season and the sixth of his career. The
Tigers took a 1-0 lead 12:22 into the game when Wright sent a
bending shot from the left edge of the box inside the right post.
It was the second multiple-goal game of Wright's career. Senior
goalkeeper Marowitz stopped five shots while improving to 4-0-0 in
goal. The Colorado College defense came up big against Elmhurst
College, allowing just five total shots and only one on goal,
during a 1-0 victory on Sunday. Junior midfielder Sean Parham
struck for the only goal of the contest in the 11th minute when he
ran down a long cross from Fechter on the right flank and put a
high shot into the net inside the near post from 12 yards out. CC
returns to conference play this week when Austin College and
Centenary visit Colorado Springs. Friday’s game against the
Kangaroos will be the first night game on the new turf at Washburn
Field.
Dallas (3-5, 0-3 SCAC) finished the week 0-2. Dallas
dropped a 2-1 decision at Colorado College before falling 3-1 vs.
Elmhurst over the weekend. The Crusaders return to action on Oct. 5
and 7 when they host Centenary and Austin College,
respectively.
Southwestern split weekend action on the road to move to
7-5 on the season and 2-2 in the SCAC. Austin College had a huge
second half, scoring three goals in the frame to hand SU a 3-0 loss
on Friday night. The Pirates outshot the 'Roos 26-23 but couldn't
get the ball in the back of the net. On a rain-soaked Sunday
afternoon it was the Pirates that had the big frame as they scored
two goals in the first half en route to a 2-1 victory. Southwestern
returns home to face Concordia University on Tuesday night before
taking on Trinity Saturday night.
No. 1 Trinity swept a road weekend of play in the
SCAC, defeating Centenary 3-0 on Friday, and dispatching Austin
College 5-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers had six different
players score goals in the two games, which put Trinity at 4-0-0 in
conference play. Yuri Ribeiro scored three of the goals to remain
the team leader with eight goals this season. Darren McAfee had a
goal and two assists for the Tigers as well. Matt Cardone had his
fifth shutout of the season on Friday, recording five saves over
the weekend. Trinity returns to action this weekend, facing both
Southwestern and the Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Tigers face
Southwestern in a conference road game on Saturday, then return
home to host UMHB in non-conference action on Sunday night.
