MATTHEW THOMAS OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior right-handed pitcher from Scottsdale, Ariz., has been named the SCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played from Monday, February 15 through Sunday, February 28.
Thomas picked up a pair of saves and struck out 12 batters in just 5.2 innings of work over his two appearances over the opening week of the season, which ended with the fourth-ranked Tigers holding a record of 5-0. The right-hander allowed just one hit in 2.2 shutout innings to finish off the season-opening win over Howard Payne, striking out four batters. He came into the second game of Saturday's DH at Southwestern with his team holding a slim 5-3 lead in the seventh inning, and the tying run at the plate. Thomas struck out eight batters and didn't allow a hit over the final three innings of the game, including striking out the side in the seventh.
Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
Senior right-hander Preston Ludwick of Centenary worked 13.0 innings over the last two weeks, including a nine-inning complete game effort in Saturday's 4-0 shutout of Huntingdon (Ala.). Ludwick struck out seven and walked one while allowing just four hits. Sophomore right-hander Landon Murray of St. Thomas pitched 6.0 innings, allowing just four hits and no runs while striking out 10 in Friday's 3-0 shutout victory over Arlington Baptist. Junior left-hander Matthew Hickey of Texas Lutheran tossed six innings of one-run baseball in a 10-1 non-conference win Saturday over Schreiner. Hickey struck out five and worked around three walks. He allowed just three hits.
