Field Hockey Recap (Week 2) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Picking up three wins this past week, Hendrix has gotten off to its best start in school history at 4-0. Kelly Rappe' led the Warriors with three goals and had two assists in wins over Eastern Mennonite, Bridgewater and Sweet Briar.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Centre split a pair of matches over the weekend at the Mary Washington Tournament in Fredericksburg, Va., losing 4-0 to national power Christopher Newport University on Saturday and defeating Marywood 3-0 Sunday. In Saturday's shutout loss to No. 12 Christopher Newport, the Colonels were outshot 19-4 on the day with senior goalkeeper Patty Cowley making five saves. Sunday, Centre was held scoreless through the first half despite outshooting Marywood 6-0, but finally broke through with three second half goals. Anna Fuller, Katy Meyer and Sarah Jessee did the scoring for the Colonels, with assists coming from Barbara Parks and Erin Bacon. Centre outshot Marywood 14-4 overall, and Cowley made two saves in the shutout win. This week, Centre hosts Bellarmine on Wednesday before going on the road at Denison on Saturday and Transylvania on Sunday.

The Warriors are off to a hot 4-0 start for the time in program history, thanks to a perfect three-game road trip to Virginia. On Thursday, Hendrix topped Eastern Mennonite 2-1 in overtime. Freshman forward Erika Jasso scored the game-winner in the 77th minute to claim victory. Junior forward Kelly Rappe’ scored with an assist from junior Maggie DesPain earlier in the game. The Warriors dominated the extra period, outshooting the Lady Royals 7-0. Freshman goalkeeper Betsy Kelly recorded four saves in the game. In the first game of the Mapp Invitational, Hendrix pulled out a 2-1 win over host Bridgewater. Trailing 1-0 in the second half, sophomore defender Elizabeth Lancaster scored in the 43rd minute to tie the game. With less than 10 minutes to go, Lancaster found DesPain on a corner, for the game-winning goal. Hendrix closed the week with a 7-0 trouncing of Sweet Briar on Sunday. Jasso recorded the fourth hat trick in school history in the game. Rappe’ netted two goals with an assist and senior Lauren Thorburg also scored. DesPain had a goal and two assists and senior Liz Williamson recorded two assists. The Warriors will open conference play at Rhodes on Saturday.

Rhodes
travelled to Fredericksburg, VA to play in the Eagles Invitational Tournament at Mary Washington.  The Lynx dropped both games, a tough 4-3 decision to Washington and Lee and a 5-2 loss to UMW.  Taylor Mills led the Lynx offense with one goal in each game while Kat Simpson tallied 3 points on the weekend on a goal and two assists.  Libby Jones and Katie Faucher each added a goal in Saturday's match.  Corrinne Palmer played stellar on defense both days and was aided by strong effort from both goalkeepers, Kelly Whelan and Jordan Robinson, on Sunday.  Regan McLaughlin shut down Mary Washington's big scoring threat, Lisa Charney, who was held scoreless for the first time this fall.  The Lynx (2-2) open their home and SCAC seasons with a game versus Hendrix this Saturday at 1 pm.

Sewanee did not play this past week. The Purple Tigers will return to the field this Saturday on the road against Transylvania. Sewanee split a pair of games on the opening weekend of play and are currently 1-1 on the year.
