Tiarra Goode wins 60-meter indoor hurdles NCAA national title

GRINNELL, Iowa—
Birmingham-Southern sophomore Tiarra Goode ran the 60-meter indoor hurdles in 8.56 seconds today to become the 2012 NCAA Division III national champion. Complete Results

Goode becomes Birmingham-Southern's first ever national champion at the Division III level, in its first year of full eligibility. The individual national title is the 27th for a SCAC student-athlete.

Birmingham-Southern College had two other individals competing at the Indoor championships and both performed well. Junior Robert Willett placed third in the men's 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.77, and junior Jessica Thornton placed fifth in the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.47. All three athletes are now NCAA Division III All-Americans.

On Friday, Hendrix College sophomore Elizabeth Krug placed ninth and finished just 17 points out of All-American status in the pentathlon. Prior to her performance, Krug was named the South/Southeast Region Female Indoor Field Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Krug started the day with a personal best mark of 9.61 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles, placing 12th. She was an inch of her best mark in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.54 meters (5 ft.-.5 in.), placing eighth. Krug then shattered her best mark in the shot put, finishing sixth at 10.43 meters (34 ft.-2.75 in.).

Next was the long jump, where she vaulted 5.11 meters (16 ft-9.25 in.), placing seventh. Krug finished the day in the 800 meters with a time of 2:30.37, placing sixth.

On the day, Krug scored 3,288 points.
