SUWANEE, Ga. - Colorado College and Centre both remain perfect in SCAC play and a top the conference standings. The CC Tigers, 3-0 in the SCAC, picked up a 20-14 win against Sewanee this past weekend; while Centre, 2-0 in the league, defeated BSC 18-6 this past Sunday.
- AROUND THE SCAC -
Birmingham-Southern went 2-1 this week, defeating LaGrange College on the road and Agnes Scott at home before falling to Centre at home on Sunday. Senior Chelsea Van Voorhis led BSC on the week with 11 goals, while junior Stephanie Gore led with 22 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. Senior goalkeeper Katie Bates also started all three games and recorded 21 saves in 101 minutes. The Panthers are on the road for nearly the next month, and will travel to face Colorado College this weekend.
Centre went 3-1 this past week picking up wins against Mt. St. Joseph, Agnes Scott and a conference win over Birmingham-Southern. The lone blemish was a 8-7 loss to Washington and Jefferson. The Colonels will take a week off from competition before playing Wooster on the road April 7th.
Colorado College posted a 4-1 record during a span of seven days over its Spring Break, which ended on Saturday with a 20-14 victory over Sewanee. Senior midfielder Grace Maloney finished with three goals and a pair of assists to lead CC?s balanced attack. Freshman attacker Madeline Pitkin scored three times during the second half, including a marker with 6:57 remaining that proved to be the first game winner of her career. Junior goalie Abby Fink made five of her eight saves during the second half. Senior attacker Leslie Jacoby scored 3:20 into overtime as the Tigers began the week with a 9-8 victory over Mount Holyoke College in which CC overcame a five-goal deficit in the second half. Fink finished with 10 saves. The overtime victory was the first for Colorado College since defeating Regis University 14-11 on April 3, 2010, in Durango, Colo. The last time CC won an overtime game at Stewart Field was on May 15, 2005, when it came from behind to defeat Cortland State, 10-9, to advance to the national semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. The following day, Maloney paced Colorado College with three goals and an assist, while Pitkin finished with two scores and a pair of helpers in a 15-3 victory over Carthage College. Sophomore defender Krysti Kiesel led the defense with five ground balls, while senior midfielder Bailey Terhune tied her career best with three caused turnovers. The Tigers scored nine unanswered goals in the second half and pulled away for a convincing 17-5 victory over Frostburg State University on Wednesday. CC improved to 6-0 for the first time since 2005. Maloney struck for a season-high four goals to pace the CC offense, while junior attacker Ellie Cole tied her season highs of three goals and four points. Playing back-to-back games for the second time during the week kept the Tigers one step behind a well-rested Babson College Squad and CC lost its first game of the season by a 16-8 count. Maloney paced the Tigers with three goals, while Burchard added a pair. Colorado College plays host to No. 7 Middlebury College on Wednesday and Birmingham-Southern College on Saturday.
Dallas (2-4, 0-2 SCAC) lost its only contest of the week 17-9 to Plymouth State. Mary Salotto led the crusaders in a losing effort with six goals and an assist. Dallas will return to action Monday afternoon at home against Pacific.
On a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Harper Davis Field, the Millsaps Majors Women's Lacrosse Team welcomed in the Berry Vikings in what would be a future conference matchup starting next season. The Vikings potent offensive attack proved to be too much for Millsaps as they were able to pull away in the second half to take a 23-14 win. The Vikings came out hot as they jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the first 15 minutes of the game. The lone goal for the Majors during that span came from sophomore Jamie Blair Page. Millsaps did not go down easily though as they Page and sophomore Haleigh Williams responded with two consecutive goals. After another goal from the Vikings, the Majors then added three more goals with two coming from Williams and one coming from Page to make it a 10-6 game. Berry got two goals back to extend their lead to six, but Millsaps added one more goal before the half as Williams struck again to make it a 12-7 game going into break. Both teams went back and forth to start the second half as Williams and Jenny Miller exchanged the next five goals to make it a 15-10 game in favor of Berry. However, the Vikings then put together three straight goals to increase their lead to eight and eventually put Millsaps away to take the 23-14 win. Williams was outstanding for the Majors, scoring eight times and also led the team defensively with three caused turnovers and two groundballs. Page added three goals on the afternoon while freshman Mary Beasley added two and fellow freshman Kelsey Ingraham added one. Ingraham also added three ground balls. The Majors fall to 3-7 on the season and return to action on Wednesday, March 28th as they welcome in Pacific University out of Oregon. The game is set to start at 5 p.m.
Sewanee closed out its three-match west coast road trip with games at Redlands, Whittier, and Colorado College last week. The Tigers first dropped a 14-10 decision at Redlands, last Monday. In that contest, Sewanee was doomed by a early 9-2 first-half deficit. The Tigers did pick up their offensive pace in the second half, however Redlands was able to hang on fro the win. Individually, senior attacker Meg Welton added five goals. Two days later, Sewanee earned a 18-14 win over Whittier. Up 8-7 at halftime, Sewanee slowly pulled away from the Poets late in the second half. Led by seven players who scored at least once, Sewanee won 20 draw controls and cleared 17 out of 20 possessions. Finally, the Tigers dropped their first SCAC match at Colorado College by a 20-14 decision, Saturday. Sewanee and Colorado were tied up in a close battle early, however used a eight goal run midway through the first half, to create some distance by halftime. Sewanee would rally in thesecond half when Oliva Vietor, Molly Arnold, Calitlin-Jean Juricic, and Anna Morrow all scored. However, after Sewanee closed the gap to one, 14-13, Colorado scored five straight goals. The Tigers will now return home for a 4 p.m., contest against regional-rival Berry College (Ga.) on March 30th.
