SUWANEE, Ga. - Defending SCAC Champions, the Purple Tigers of Sewanee, picked up right where they left off a season ago opening up the year a perfect 3-0 and now riding a seven game winning streak that dates back to last year. Colorado College picked up the first conference win of the year knocking off Millsaps 14-1 behind four goals from Leslie Jacoby.

Birmingham-Southern fell in a pair of games
last week to open the 2012 season. The Panthers lost 20-9 against
Augustana 20-9 before being knocked off 17-8 against Carthage. In
the loss to Augustana, Logan Harris led the Panthers with three
goals.
Centre opened up their second women’s
lacrosse season with a pair of wins against Tennessee Wesleyan and
Alma respectively. The Colonels knocked off Tennessee Wesleyan 13-7
on Saturday behind five goals from Emily Madden. Centre retuned to
action Sunday and knocked off Alma 21-3. Sarah Mastey paced the
Colonels in the win with five goals and three assists. Just as they
did a season ago Centre has opened up with a perfect 2-0
record.
Junior goalkeeper Abby Fink made 16 saves, including 10 in the
second half, as Colorado College
began its 2012 campaign with a 9-6 victory over Division II Regis
University on Tuesday night. Junior midfielder Anna Crosby led the
Tigers with three goals, while senior midfielder Kelsey Morell
recorded a goal and an assist. After the Rangers tied the game at
4-4 just 26 seconds in the second half, CC struck for three
consecutive goals. Senior attacker Leslie Jacoby put the Tigers
ahead to stay, and freshman midfielder Dylan Voneiff scored what
proved to be the game winner with 19:34 remaining. Senior
midfielder Grace Maloney paced the Tigers with four ground balls
and four draw controls. Senior midfielder Bailey Terhune and Jacoby
each caused a pair of turnovers. On Saturday at Millsaps, Jacoby
tied her career high of six points with four goals and a pair of
assists as Colorado College cruised to a 14-1 victory in the
conference opener for both teams. Jacoby and Anna Jackson scored 13
seconds during the opening minute of the game and the Tigers never
looked back. CC tacked on four more goals before the Majors got on
the scoreboard a little more than halfway through the first frame.
That, however, was the only marker the Colorado College defense
would allow. The Tigers got that goal back 69 seconds later when
sophomore attacker Madeline Scherer found the net for the first
time this season and CC added four more tallies to build an 11-1
lead after 30 minutes. Junior attacker Ellie Cole recorded three
markers and an assist for the Tigers. Scherer posted the fourth
multiple-goal game of her career, while senior midfielder Kelsey
Morell added a score and two assists. Colorado College finished
with 22 total shots, compared to nine for Millsaps. Junior
goaltender Amy Fink stopped five of the six shots she faced. Senior
midfielder Grace Maloney and freshman attacker Madeline Pitkin
paced CC with five ground balls apiece, while freshmen midfielders
Dylan Voneiff and Leigh Nicholl each had a pair of draw controls.
The Tigers are idle until March 10 when they travel to Texas for a
league game at the University of Dallas.
Dallas opened up the 2012 campaign with a 14-10 loss
against LaGrange. Mary Salotto led the Crusaders with seven goals
and two assists on the day. Dallas returns to action this Friday in
a conference contest with Millsaps.
Millsaps opened the 2012 season against the Colorado
College Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Harper Davis Field. The
Majors did fall, but hung tough with the Tigers, holding them to
three goals in the The Tigers wasted little time as they jumped out
to a 6-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of the first half. Millsaps
did not go down easily as freshman Mary Beasley found sophomore
Haleigh Williams who put one home while falling down to score the
Majors first goal of the new season. Colorado extended their lead
to 11-1 towards the end of the first half as they wore down the
Majors. Millsaps showed a lot of pride in the second half as they
held Colorado to three goals in the second half. They could not get
anything going offensively though, as they did fall 14-1. Freshman
Kelsey Ingraham led the way defensively with five ground balls and
two caused turnovers while Williams added three ground balls and a
goal. Ingraham was also 8-of-16 on faceoffs. Sophomore Dani Rossano
and Jamie Blair Page each added two ground balls as well. Sophomore
Madelyn Walker got the start in goal and picked up eight saves as
she took the loss for the Majors. Millsaps returns to action on
Tuesday as they travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take on Ferrum
College. Faceoff is set for 5 p.m.
The defending SCAC Champion Tigers have begun the season 3-0 after
a 14-9 win over Carthage College, Sunday. Over the past two weeks,
Sewanee has started where it left 2011 off.
Sewanee has outscored its opponents 42-35 while outshooting its
opposition by eight shots. Offensively, Sewanee has converted 42.1
percent of its shots, while putting 72.0 percent of its attempts on
goal. Additionally, Meg Welton leads Sewanee with 14 goals and 16
points through the first three contests. Heading into this week,
Sewanee has held teams under 10 goals twice this season thanks to
goalkeeper Amy Nusbaum and an outstanding group of defenders. This
week, Sewanee will look to keep its perfect record intact, when the
Tigers travel to Danville, Ky., for a neutral site game against
Denison. That contest will begin at 10:00 a.m. on the campus of
Centre College.
