where Centre outscored Denison 6-3, but the damage had already been
done. The Loss drops Centre to 3-1 on the year while Denison
improves to 3-0. The Colonels return to action against Aquinas on
Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Farris Stadium.
Following a two-week break, Colorado
College returns to action on Saturday, March 10,
at the University of Dallas. With victories over Regis University
and Millsaps College, the Tigers opened the season with a 2-0
record for the fourth year in a row. CC is averaging 11.5 goals per
contest while allowing just 3.5. The seven goals surrendered
through two games is the fewest since 2004. Colorado College is 6-0
all-time against Dallas, having outscored the Crusaders 95-16. The
Tigers will have eight more days without a game before playing host
to Mount Holyoke College on Sunday, March 18, but play five home
games during a seven-game span which concludes on March 24 against
Sewanee.
Dallas fell in its lone contest of the week 17-13 against
SCAC opponent Millsaps. The Crusaders were led by Mary Salotto with
six goals and two assists in a losing effort. Dallas returns to
action this week hosting Colorado College on Saturday in a much
anticipated conference tilt.
Millsaps The Millsaps Majors Women's Lacrosse Team not
only won their first game of the young 2012 season on Saturday
afternoon, but they also picked up their first Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference victory in their short two year history as they
defeated the University of Dallas, 17-13. The Majors came out on
fire as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the game's first 14
minutes. Freshman Kendall Fann got the scoring started with a goal
21 seconds into the game thanks to an assist from fellow freshman
Mary Beasley. Sophomore Haleigh Williams then scored four of the
next five goals, as she could not be stopped. Sophomore Jamie Blair
Page also added a goal while Beasley added two more assists. Dallas
finally got on the board at the 16:22 mark, but Williams responded
with an unassisted goal 32 seconds later to make it 7-1. Page,
Fann, and Williams all scored goal to make it 10-3, before the
Crusaders went on a run, scoring five straight goals to make it a
10-8 game. However, Millsaps finished the half strong with three
goals in the final 1:35 to make it 13-9 at half. The Majors took
control of the second half as they paced themselves in the first 15
minutes and extended their lead to 17-9 thanks to goals from
sophomore Kenya Strong-Johnston, Fann, Beasley, and Williams.
Dallas did add four goals towards the end, but it was too little,
too late as the Majors took the win. Williams was unbelievable on
this day as she scored eight goals, seven of them coming in the
first half and added 10 ground balls. Fann also played well as she
added five goals on the day. Senior Laura Gray was also great
defensively as she picked up eight ground balls. Beasley had three
assists. Freshman Nicholette Hannah got her first start in goal
while sophomore Madelyn Walker played the field (four ground balls)
as she picked up eight saves to earn the win. The Majors improve to
1-2 on the year and 1-1 in the SCAC. They return to action on
Friday as they come back home and welcome in Shorter College out of
Georgia. Action is set to being at 6 p.m.
Sewanee suffered its first loss of the season last
Saturday, as the Tigers fell against Denison 14-9 in Danville, Ky.
In that contest, after the Tigers (3-1) took a quick 1-0 lead,
Denison rallied with six straight goals over the next 15
minutes. Sewanee did respond moments later, when Mallory
Grimm, Meg Welton, and Caitlin-Jean Juricic netted goals right
before the half. Down by two, 7-5, to start the second half,
Sewanee's deficit grew to four, 10-6, when Carly Tschantz scored
off a free position shot. Less than a minute later, Welton pulled
Sewanee to within three with a free position goal of her own.
Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Tigers got after
Denison scored the next three goals. Ellie Murphy added two late
goals for Sewanee. Sewanee returns this week with 4:00 p.m. contest
March 12th against Wooster.
