Game One
Colorado College struck for a season-high 15 first-half goals and cruised to an 18-8 victory over Birmingham-Southern College in the first semifinal game of 2012 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon. Box Score
The Tigers, who improved to 14-3, advance to Sunday's title game where they will square off host Sewanee.
"Everybody played very well together," head coach Susan Stuart said. "The attack moved well, saw each other and created a lot of good looks. Offensively, we're in the right place at the right time."
Junior attacker Ellie Cole scored twice and set up three more goals, while senior midfielder Grace Maloney recorded five assists for CC, which set a program record for victories in a single-season.
Maloney became the first Tiger to record 70 points in a single season since Cassie Abel recorded 78 points in 2004. Maloney currently ranks seventh with 180 career points and is tied for sixth with 55 assists.
Ten different players found the net for Colorado College, scored on 15 of their 22 shots in the first half.
Senior attacker Leslie Jacoby and sophomore attacker Madeline Scherer added three goals, while Frances Staadt finished with two goals and a pair of assists.
"We spread the scoring around again," Stuart said. "That's what we like to see in our attack. Anybody can score on any given day."
Junior midfielder Kate Krieger scored 18 seconds into the game and senior attacker Kelsey Morell added another tally 1:11 later to give the Tigers a lead they would never relinquish.
The Panthers pulled to within a goal on three occasions, the last of which occurred when sophomore midfielder Madeline Golden scored on a free-position shot with 17:59 remaining in the first half, but that was as close as they would get.
CC found the net on six of its next seven goals to open a 10-4 lead when Scherer scored for the second time with 8:09 to play.
After sophomore midfielder Logan Harris trimmed BSC's deficit to 10-5 with 6:23 on the clock, Colorado College added five more tallies during the final 5:57 to build a 10-goal lead after 30 minutes.
Freshman attacker Madeline Pitkin and Scherer scored early in the second half to extend the Tigers' advantage to 17-5, and CC was content to work the clock after freshman attacker Virginia Logue added her team's final tally with 20:57 remaining.
Junior goaltender Abby Fink made eight saves for Colorado College, which finished with a 29-20 advantage in total shots.
Junior midfielder Ginna Oates led the Tigers with five draw controls, while senior midfielder Bailey Terhune and sophomore defender Krysti Kiesel grabbed three ground balls apiece.
Senior goaltender Katie Bates stopped six shots for the Panthers, who finished the season with an 8-7 record.
Game Two
After a quick start, the Sewanee women's lacrosse team never looked back as the Tigers blew out conference rival Centre, 16-7, Saturday, during semifinal action of the 2012 SCAC Women's Lacrosse Championships. Box Score
With the win, the Tigers improved to 11-5 overall. Additionally, Sewanee finished the season a perfect 2-0 against the Colonels.
Sewanee quickly got on the board when senior Meg Welton scored the first goal of the match, with less then a minute off the clock. Moments later, Welton was at it again when she assisted on Olivia Vietor's goal with 27:26 remaining in the half.
After Centre finally scored, Sewanee continued to surge. The Tigers opened up their lead even more, after Sewanee netted five out of the next six goals. The Colonels briefly stopped the Tiger attack when Emily Madden and Meg Hawthorne scored consecutive goals late in the first.
However, any Centre momentum was short lived, as Welton and freshman Ellie Murphy added back-to-back goals for Sewanee, right before the intermission.
In the second half, Sewanee extended its advantage to as much as 10, before Centre finally cut the final deficit to nine with 1:29 left.
Overall, Sewanee outshot Centre, 32-25. Additionally, the Tigers' defense forced 26 turnovers while senior goalkeeper Amy Nusbaum made 12 saves.
Offensively, Arnold led Sewanee with four goals and an assist. Welton and senior Page Carpenter scored three goals each, while Vietor (two), Murphy, Sally Anne Greenwood and Mallory Grimm also found the back of the net.
The second-seeded Tigers will now face top-seed Colorado College in the conference finals Sunday. Draw control is scheduled for noon at Harris Stadium.
