Austin College split its two
matches over the weekend, falling 4-0 to Centre in Komen Game V
before pulling out a dramatic double overtime victory against
Sewanee. The 'Roos are now 5-5-2 overall and 1-3 on conference
play. Against Centre, the Colonels scored three first half goals
and the 'Roos were unable to recover despite out-shooting Centre
11-4 after halftime. On Sunday, the 'Roos and Sewanee battled to a
standstill after regulation, and following a scoreless first
overtime period and a lightning delay, Mason Waddell found Chris
Melton with a long pass and Melton was able to loft the ball over
the Tiger keeper for the decisive goal with 6:05 left to play.
Grant Gosselin made four saves in each match for the 'Roos. This
weekend Austin College heads to Colorado Springs to take on
Colorado College and Conway, Arkansas to take on
Hendrix.
Birmingham-Southern split on the road this week, falling
to Colorado College on Friday, 2-1, but rebounding with a 3-1
victory against Hendrix on Sunday. Freshman Emil Saevarsson scored
the Panthers’ goal in the Colorado College game, while
seniors Garner Shivers and Tyler Evans and freshman Tobias Winter
scored the three goals against the Warriors on Sunday. The Panthers
stay on the road for their matches this weekend as they travel to
face Millsaps, Friday, and Rhodes, Sunday.
Centre traveled to Texas this past weekend for two conference matches against Austin College and the University of Dallas. On Friday night, Centre went to Sherman, TX to take on Austin in the Komen Game V, where the two teams battle both on the field and off the field, seeing who can raise the most money on behalf of the Susan G Komen Foundation for breast cancer research and awareness. This year, Austin won the fundraising contest, but the Colonels came out on top in the game, winning 4-0 behind a Josh Settle (Bowling Green, KY) hat-trick. Centre scored three 1st half goals and added a fourth in the 2nd half, with Chris Jackson (Oxford, OH) picking up his sixth shutout in seven games in the net. Over the course of these five Komen games, Centre and Austin have raised an amazing $32,000 dollars in the name of the Susan G Komen for the Cure breast cancer foundation. Centre then traveled to Dallas, TX for a Sunday match-up against the University of Dallas. In a rainy contest, the Colonels picked-up a 3-1 win, Austin Hall (Indianapolis, IN) picking up a goal and two assists, with Ryan Garvey (Louisville, KY) getting the game-winning goal in the 2nd half. With the two wins, Centre improves to 8-3-1 on the season and is 3-1-0 in SCAC play. The Colonels will head to Tennessee this Friday to take on Sewanee-The University of the South before hosting non-conference foe Maryville (TN) on Monday night.
Senior captain/midfielder Chris Lutz struck for a pair of goals
in a span of 11:07 early in the first half to help Colorado
College post a 2-1 victory over Birmingham-Southern
College on Friday. Lutz, who now is tied for the team lead with a
pair of game-winning goals, has scored three times in two games
after moving forward from his defender position. It marked the
first multiple-goal game of his career. Junior goalkeeper Forrest
Marowitz finished with three saves and got a huge block from
freshman defender Andrew Worthington a little more than five
minutes into the game. Colorado College enjoyed a decisive
statistical and territorial advantage against Oglethorpe on Sunday,
but the inability to put the ball in an open net resulted in a 2-1
overtime loss to the Stormy Petrels. Junior forward Daniel Wright
scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season to tie the game in
the 68th minute, but OU scored on a direct kick 2:28 into the extra
session. The Tigers finished with a 24-15 advantage in total shots
and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. CC slipped to 2-2-3 in overtime
games and has lost just one game in regulation. Colorado College
plays its final home games next weekend when Austin College and the
University of Dallas visit Stewart Field on Friday and Sunday,
respectively.
Dallas (2-7-1, 0-4) dropped two SCAC home contests on the
week after being outscored a combined 4-1 in the second half. On
Friday, Dallas’ took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a
Michael Chapman goal, but Sewanee: University of the South rallied
to a 2-1 victory over the Crusaders, scoring in the 52nd and 72nd
minutes. On Sunday afternoon at Crusader Field, Dallas’
Matthew Wise leveled the match against visiting Centre College,
1-1, with a 57th minute tally. The Colonels, however, proved to be
too much for Dallas, netting 75th and 76th minute goals en route to
a 3-1 victory. The Crusaders will look to snap a five-game losing
skid when they travel to Conway, Ark., for a 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14
contest against Hendrix College.
Hendrix lost to Oglethorpe 2-0 at home on
Friday in front of 314 fans. The Stormy Petrels outshot the
Warriors 20-19. Senior keeper Adam Legg had six saves for Hendrix
and junior Tresor Mukiza was responsible for a team save. Freshman
midfielder Greg Gandy scored with assists from Duncan Keegan and
Kevin Gregory in a 3-1 loss to Birmingham-Southern on Sunday. The
Warriors will host Dallas on Friday and Austin on
Sunday.
Millsaps dropped two games this past weekend in Texas to
the Southwestern Pirates and the Trinity Tigers. In a game that saw
31 total shots, the Millsaps Majors Men's Soccer Team fell short to
the Southwestern Pirates on Friday night, 2-0 thanks to two goals
in the second half. The Majors came back that Sunday to take on
Trinity. Millsaps hung tough with the nationally ranked Trinity
Tigers, but in the end, the Tigers proved to be too much as they
knocked off Millsaps 5-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Petrels continued winning games at a record setting pace for
head coach Jon Akin this past weekend as
Oglethorpe picked up two more SCAC wins over
Hendrix (W, 2-0) and Colorado College (W, 2-1 OT), both road
triumphs. Against Hendrix on Friday, Division I transfers Mark
Lavery (Kentucky) and Sean King (Presbyterian) hooked up to get the
Petrels on the board just six minutes into the game when Lavery
found King for the tally. The two squads then battled back and
forth, Hendrix mustering 12 first half shots to Oglethorpe's 10,
but keeper Frank Petersen denied all seven attempts on target in an
outstanding effort. The Petrels tilted play further in their
direction in the second half, earning 9 shots to the Warriors 8 and
only allowing two on target, both of which Petersen handled.
Oglethorpe put the contest out of reach in the 80th minute when
freshman Austin Fiddler scored his second goal of the season on an
assist from sophomore Dustin Hoeppner. Against Colorado on Sunday,
The Petrels clinched their seventh straight win when Ben Robertson
cracked home the game-winner just two minutes into OT on a free
kick from 30 yards out. The game remained scoreless for the first
65 minutes until Nick Williamson took a pass from Harrison
McConnell and converted it to gold to give Oglethorpe a 1-0
advantage. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Tigers
equalized exactly two minutes later in the 67th minute on a strike
from Daniel Wright. The squads battled back and forth but neither
could jump ahead before the regulation clock expired. Then, at the
2:38 mark of overtime, Sean King was fouled at the top of the box,
30 yards out, to set up Robertson's free kick heroics. The Tigers
fired 24 shots in the contest but only six were on target. The
Petrels, meanwhile, cracked 15 shots and put 10 on target to notch
their seventh straight overall and fourth consecutive conference
win. At 10-2, the Petrels are officially off to their best start in
school history with an .833 winning percentage through 12 games.
Another victory on Friday against Rhodes would give Oglethorpe its
longest winning streak (8) in school history.
Rhodes had a tough road trip to Texas falling to Trinity
10-3 before taking a loss to Southwestern 3-1 on Sunday. The Lynx
return to the pitch this weekend hosting a pair of SCAC teams in
Oglethorpe and Birmingham-Southern.
Going on the road for the first time in conference action
Sewanee split a pair on matches at Dallas and
Austin. The Tigers defeated Dallas 2-1 Friday night, with goals
from forward Matt Lightfoot and defender Solly Thomas. Two days
later the Tigers played hard again, but unfortunately the host
Kangroos outlasted Sewanee for a 1-0 2OT win. Looking ahead
Sewanee will host SCAC rival Centre with a 7:00 p.m., Friday before
heading on the road to face Berry College of Sunday.
The Southwestern offense continues to impress as
the Pirates went 2-0 in conference action this week to move to
6-5-1 on the year and 3-1 in the SCAC. On Friday night the Pirates
played the first-ever game under the lights at Southwestern's
field. After a scoreless first half the Pirates took advantage of
two fouls to defeat Millsaps College 2-0. A foul in the box on a
corner handed the Pirates a penalty kick. Matthew Nickell calmly
approached the ball and put it away to the left of the diving
keeper to give SU a 1-0 lead. Perkins scored the second goal for
Southwestern after being fouled on a breakaway just outside of the
box. Two shots off the free kick were saved by the Majors' defense,
but Perkins put it away and out of reach for Millsaps with the put
back. After much needed rain in Central Texas Southwestern scored
in the 7th minute to take an early lead on Rhodes and took the 1-0
through halftime. Rhodes tied the game just six minutes into the
second half, but Perkins added two more goals less than a minute
apart to give SU the 3-1 lead. The Pirates head to San Antonio on
Friday night to face Trinity beginning at 8pm.
#5 Trinity swept a pair of SCAC games at home over the
weekend, defeating Rhodes 10-3 on Friday, then dispatching Millsaps
5-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers had 10 different players score
goals in the two games – including five different
goal-scorers in Sunday’s win. Brian Hines had a hat trick in
Friday’s win over Rhodes, scoring twice in 26 seconds in the
first half, then adding his third early in the second period.
Trinity will play just once this week, facing off against
Southwestern at home on Friday. Last season, Trinity edged
Southwestern 2-1 in an overtime game in Georgetown. Each of the
past two meetings has gone to overtime between these two Texas
schools.
