SUWANEE, Ga. – In exclusive 2012
all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference voting by the
league’s head women’s lacrosse coaches, Grace Maloney
of Colorado College was selected as the SCAC Offensive
Player-of-the-Year, while teammate Abby Fink was voted conference
Defensive Player-of-the-Year.
In the same balloting, Emily Madden of Centre College was tabbed as
SCAC Rookie-of-the-Year, and Colorado College head coach Susan
Stuart, Millsaps College head coach Tracy Cepnio and Centre head
coach Julie Beer were selected SCAC Tri-Coaches-of-the-Year.
Colorado College’s Grace Maloney, a senior midfielder from Wilmette, Ill., was at the top of the SCAC in nearly every offensive statistical category. A two-time First Team all-SCAC performer, Maloney was second in the league in assists (26), third in points (73) and tied for fifth in goals (47) in her final season for the Tigers. Maloney led the conference with 26 points in SCAC contests, and helped guide Colorado College to a 15-3 overall record, 4-1 in SCAC play and the school’s first-ever conference title. Maloney’s career SCAC totals in goals scored (83), assists (41) and points (124) places her among the league’s all-time leaders in each category.
Maloney received three votes from the coaches in the balloting for SCAC Offensive-Player-of-the-Year to earn the award. Meg Hawthorne of Centre, Haleigh Williams of Millsaps and Meg Welton of Sewanee all received one vote each.
Colorado College’s Abby Fink, a junior goalkeeper from Plymouth, Minn., led the SCAC in nearly every goalkeeping statistical category. A two-time First Team all-SCAC performer, Fink led the conference in goals-against-average (7.74), saves (162), wins (15) and winning percentage (.833). She was second in the league with a .536 save percentage and anchored a defense that was tops in the conference in goals-against-average.
Fink received three votes from the coaches in the balloting for SCAC Defensive-Player-of-the-Year. Stephanie Gore of Birmingham-Southern College received two votes and Sarah Squire of Sewanee earned the remaining vote.
Emily Madden, a first-year attacker from Louisville, Ky., led all freshmen in every single offensive category this season. Madden was tops among first-year players in goals scored (43), assists (18) and points (61). All of those numbers where good enough to put Madden in the top six in the league in each category. Madden played a key role in leading the Colonels to a 4-1 conference record as Centre was the second-most explosive offense in the league, averaging over 14 goals a contest.
Madden received three votes from the coaches in the balloting for SCAC Rookie-of-the-Year. Maddy Pitkin of Colorado College, Sally Anne Greenwood of Sewanee and Kendall Fann of Millsaps all received one vote a piece.
Colorado College head coach Susan Stuart, the program's first and only varsity head coach, guided the Tigers to a 4-1 conference mark, a 15-3 overall record and the Tigers’ first-ever SCAC women’s lacrosse title. This marks the second straight year Stuart has earned SCAC Coach-of-the-Year honors. Stuart, who has guided the Tigers to a 160-82-1 (.666) overall record during her 16 seasons that included six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, was named West Region Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association in 2001, 2004 and 2005.
Centre College head coach Julie Beer, in her third year as the inaugural head women’s lacrosse coach in Danville, guided the Colonels to their best season in school history with an overall record of 13-5; 4-1 in conference play. Beer was instrumental in helping assemble an offense that was second in the league, averaging over 14 goals per game while also putting together a defense that was one of just two conference teams to hold opponents to under 10 goals per contest.
Millsaps College head coach Tracy Cepnio, the Majors first and
only head women’s lacrosse coach, tripled her win total from
her first season at the helm in Jackson, Mississippi. Cepnio guided
the Majors to their first-ever conference win this season, a 17-13
win victory over the University of Dallas Millsaps showed dramatic
improvement under Cepnio in 2012, especially on the offensive side
of the ball, The Majors, who averaged just over four goals a game a
season ago, found the net over 10 times per contest this season.
Defensively, the Majors cut their goals allowed from 17 a game in
2011 to just over 14 per contest in 2012.
