SUWANEE, Ga. - With their 61-58 victory over visiting Trinity on Friday, Sewanee picked up its first win against the Texas Tigers since a 66-50 win over Trinity on January 9, 2004. At 10-6 overall, Sewanee's 10 wins are the most since the Purple Tigers posted 12 wins in 2004-05.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College saw its four game winning streak
snapped as the Kangaroos dropped a pair of SCAC games to #14
Birmingham-Southern (92-62) and Oglethorpe 79-52. With the losses,
Austin College drops to 10-8 overall and 6-3 in the SCAC. Against
Birmingham-Southern, the ‘Roos were led by Josh Saunders as
he scored a team-high 12 points. Antoine Thompson rounded out the
double-figure scorers as he added 10 points. Against Oglethorpe, AC
was led by Thompson’s team-high 11 points. Austin College
returns to action on Friday and Saturday hosting Centre and
Sewanee, respectively.
No. 12 Birmingham-Southern continued its winning
streak this week with two more home victories, defeating Austin
College on Friday and Dallas on Saturday. BSC has now won nine
straight games this season and 39 straight home games in Bill
Battle Coliseum. Against Austin College, Jasen Jonus led all
players with 16 points, followed by Larry Thomas with 13 and Caleb
Lee with 11. Blaise White led with six assists and five steals.
Against Dallas, Zac Richards led all players with a career-high 27
points, as well as five Panthers in double figures. Kevin Kegarise
added 13 points, Thomas scored 12, Nick Murphy posted 11, and Jonus
and Colin Henry recorded 10 points each. The Panthers are on the
road for the next two weeks, traveling next weekend to face
Colorado College, Friday, in Colorado Springs, and Hendrix College,
Sunday, in Conway, Ark.
Centre hosted two Texas schools in a
Friday-Saturday home stand and both games had similar results, as
Centre pulled away in the second half to two double digit victories
over Southwestern and Trinity. The Colonels led Southwestern by
three at the half, but thanks to the shooting of Jeff Mullaney,
they were able to outscore the Pirates 36-24 in the second half en
route to a 64-49 win. Mullaney led all scorers with 19 points on
6-10 shooting. Greg Ross posted a double-double with 13 points and
14 rebounds. Against Trinity on Saturday, the Colonels scored 43
points in the second half, blazing the nets by shooting 67% from
the field in the final frame as Centre defeated the Tigers, 67-52.
Greg Ross led all scorers with 20 points while also pulling down
nine rebounds. This week the Colonels will travel to Texas for a
weekend showdown with Austin College and Dallas.
Sophomore guard Ryan Milne poured in a game-high 26 points, but
Colorado College saw its three-game conference
winning streak come to an end with a 66-58 loss at Millsaps. CC
clawed its way to within 55-50 when Milne drained his second trey
with 4:21 to play, but like every other time the Tigers closed the
gap, the Majors answered with just enough points to maintain a
comfortable lead. Chris Lesnansky added 12 points for Colorado
College, but no one else had more than six. The Tigers dropped to
1-4 on the road when Rhodes scored at the buzzer to escape with a
71-69 victory on Sunday. Milne tied the game on a layup with six
seconds to play as CC erased a six-point deficit during the final
three minutes. Jeremiah Waters and Lesnansky paced the Tigers with
15 points apiece. CC returns home this week to play host to
Birmingham-Southern and Oglethorpe on Friday and Sunday,
respectively.
Dallas (4-14, 2-7 SCAC) dropped both SCAC games played
during the week. Dallas headed to Atlanta for a Friday night battle
with Oglethorpe University. Trailing 45-35 at halftime, the
Crusaders made fared better in the second half, but fell 76-65 to
the Stormy Petrels. Dallas shot 35.2 percent (25-of-71) from the
field, while Oglethorpe sank 47.2 percent (25-of-53) of their
attempts. Junior forward Tanner Bruffey led all scorers with
26-points for Dallas. The Crusaders then journeyed to Birmingham,
Ala., for a match-up with #14 Birmingham-Southern. BSC notched a
100-78 victory. Sophomore guard Braeton Hightower was high-point
man, totaling 25 points. Dallas returns to action against Sewanee
(Friday, Jan. 27, at 8 p.m.) and Centre (Sunday, Jan. 29, at 3
p.m.).
Hendrix split a pair of overtime conference road games
over the weekend. Rhodes rallied back to top Hendrix 60-56 in
Memphis on Friday. However, in the second half, Hendrix managed to
shot just 28 percent (7-of-25) and Rhodes overcame a 14-point
deficit to force overtime. Senior guard Chris Goodman led the
Warriors with a season-high 17 points, making 5-of-8 three-point
attempts. Senior guard Ammon Martin scored 13 points and dished out
four assists. In a game that featured 16 ties and 15 lead changes,
Hendrix pulled out a 58-54 overtime win at Millsaps on Sunday.
Goodman and junior guard Jaren Riley hit back-to-back
three-pointers in overtime to overcome a four-point deficit and
take control of the game. Goodman once again was the high scorer,
scoring 14 points. Senior center Nick Heathscott added 13 points
and Martin scored 13 points and tied his career-high with seven
assists. The Warriors will return to Conway to host Oglethorpe on
Friday and Birmingham-Southern on Sunday.
Millsaps split a pair of SCAC games this week. In front
of a white hot crowd at The Hangar Dome, junior Taylor Meades' 18
points and junior Nick Cortese's 15 points propelled Millsaps to a
66-58 win over the Colorado College Tigers. Meades was big in the
second half as he scored 14 of his 18 points in the half. Millsaps
came back the next night and dropped a heartbreaker to Hendrix,
58-54 in overtime. With the loss, Millsaps falls to 7-10 overall
and 2-7 in SCAC play. The Majors prepare to head to Texas for a
conference road trip as they will take on Southwestern Friday and
Trinity Sunday.
Oglethorpe extended its winning streak to three games
with two SCAC wins over the week. Friday, the Stormy Petrels
outlasted Dallas for a 76-65 home win. Andrew Steioff led
Oglethorpe with team-highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds. Alec Pitts
(19 points), Sam Purdy (12 points) and Christian Molinet (10
points) rounded out OU’s double-digit scorers. Against Austin
College on Sunday, Oglethorpe raced out to an 11 point halftime
lead before cruising to a 79-52 win over the Kangaroos. Purdy (20
points), Pitts (18 points) and Molinet (10 points) paced the
Petrels. OU is now 9-9 overall and 4-5 in SCAC play. The Petrels
travel to Hendrix on Friday and Colorado College on Sunday.
Rhodes got two hard fought victories this
weekend, prevailing in both down the stretch. Friday night saw the
Lynx found themselves trailing by 14 points with under 14 minutes
to play. Two defense stops and a layup by junior Andrew Galow
forced overtime. In overtime a big three-pointer by Kory Kilpatrick
gave the Lynx a lead they would not let go, winning 60-56. Galow
lead the Lynx with 25 points, 6 assists, and 3 rebounds. With 6.1
seconds remaining Colorado College’s Ryan Milne hit an 8-foot
floater to tie the game at 69 Galow then drove the ball 94 feet
banking in a running jumper with 0.9 seconds left. Rhodes escaped
with a 71-69 win. Rhodes moves to 12-6 overall and 7-2 in the
SCAC.
Sewanee (10-6 overall, 5-4 SCAC) continued to
play well this weekend. The Tigers earned a pair of SCAC wins over
Trinity, Friday, and against Southwestern, Saturday. Sewanee has
now won five straight home games inside Juhan Gymnasium, in
addition to winning 10 games on the season. The 10 wins are the
most since the 2004-05 campaign. This week, Sewanee will complete
the Texas swing, when the Tigers travel to Dallas on Friday and
Austin College on Saturday.
Southwestern continues to battle their opponents,
hanging with teams through the majority of the game, but fall
behind in the waning minutes of the contest. This weekend was no
exception as the Pirates were within single digits of their
opponents with less six minutes to play. Friday night SU was
out-rebounded 40-24 as they fell to Centre College 64-49. Saturday
evening the Pirates jumped out to an early lead and went into the
break tied with Sewanee. With 13 seconds to play Michael Cantu
drove through traffic to hit a layup and was fouled on the play. He
made the free throw, pulling Southwestern within two points.
Sewanee made their free throws to close out the game and had SU the
61-55 loss. The Pirates sit at 1-16 on the year and 1-7 in the SCAC
after the weekend. They come home for games against Millsaps on
Friday night and Rhodes Saturday night.
Trinity lost both games of a road weekend in SCAC play,
falling to both Sewanee and Centre on Friday and Saturday. The
Tigers were edged 61-58 by Sewanee in the weekend opener, then saw
Centre pull away with a strong second half in a 67-52 loss in the
second game. Trinity has now lost three straight games, which
followed a stretch of five wins in six games, dating back to
mid-December. All three losses in Trinity’s current streak
have been SCAC games, and it marks the team’s first
three-game losing streak in conference play since the 2000-01
season. The Tigers lost four SCAC games in a row that year
– including one each to Sewanee and Centre. Trinity returns
home this weekend to face off against Millsaps and Rhodes on Friday
and Sunday. The Tigers defeated Rhodes 62-51 in the regular season,
and also beat the Lynx 62-42 in the 2011 conference tournament.
Trinity won 53-45 in the only meeting with Millsaps last
season.
