late comeback attempt by Sewanee to claim a 10-9 victory Friday in
Danville, Ky. The Colonels never trailed and built a lead of 10-6

Colorado College extended its winning streak to four games
and maintained its hold on first place atop the SCAC standings with
victories at Birmingham-Southern and Oglethorpe last weekend. In a
game that featured the top two scoring teams in the conference, the
Tigers defense proved to be the difference against BSC. With the
score tied 4-4 after 30 minutes, CC allowed only four shots and one
goal during the second half. The Tigers took the lead for good when
freshmen midfielders Dylan Davie and Henri Halle struck 3:04 apart
to give CC a 6-4 lead with 10:27 remaining in the third quarter. In
Sunday’s 21-2 victory at Oglethorpe, Sprole struck for all
three of his goals in the first period as Colorado College built a
commanding 11-2 lead after 15 minutes. Sophomore attacker Jake
Smith led the Tigers with three goals and an assist. Colorado
College plays host to Southwestern on Friday night under the lights
at Washburn Field.
Dallas (1-8, 1-4 SCAC) split two SCAC games this week. The
Crusaders picked up their first win of the season on Friday, as
Dallas edged by Millsaps, 7-5. Dallas was led by Stephen
Joseph’s three goals. He also added an assist. Chris Kerner
added two goals and two assists in the win. Against Rhodes on
Sunday, the Lynx jumped out to a 5-0 second quarter lead before
pulling away for the 13-5 win. Dallas returns to action on April
6th when the Crusaders travel to Hendrix for an 8 p.m.
contest.
Hendrix went 1-1 on the weekend, picking up their first
SCAC win of the season. Hendrix topped Oglethorpe 12-3 in Atlanta
on Friday. The Warriors outshot the Stormy Petrels 51-20 and had a
45-20 ground ball advantage. Sophomore midfielder Cameron Millstone
recorded six points with four goals and two assists and had 12
ground balls. Senior Zach Doelger added two goals and an assist and
Charles Hotchkiss and Alex Wilkinson each had two goals. Senior
keeper Keith Clemens had six saves and only allowed three goals. In
an 18-8 loss at Birmingham-Southern on Sunday, Millstone added
three more goals and sophomore Dillan Rice had two goals and two
assists. Hotchkiss, Doelger and freshman Matt Carpenter found the
net as well. Millstone also came up with nine ground balls and
senior defenseman James Hanson had six ground balls and three
caused turnovers. Millstone also moved into first place on
Hendrix’ career list with 64 points and 110 shots on goal. He
has also set new single-season marks with 28 goals, 119 shots, 78
shots on goal and 83 ground balls. Hendrix will return home this
weekend to host Dallas and Southwestern.
Millsaps (2-6, 1-2 SCAC) dropped both of their games last
week to SCAC opponents Dallas and Southwestern on Friday and
Sunday, respectively. Against Dallas, the Majors were on the short
end of a tough 7-5 decision. The teams went into halftime tied at
3-3 before Dallas outscored Millsaps 3-1 in the second half for the
winning margin. Millsaps was led by Hunter Stevison who tallied
three goals and an assist in the loss. Against Southwestern,
Millsaps was again tied at 3-3 at halftime before the Pirates went
on for a 9-4 win. The Majors were led by Stevison’s two
goals. Millsaps returns to action on April 6th & 8th when they
travel to Sewanee and Centre, respectively.
Oglethorpe dropped two SCAC games last week to Hendrix
(12-3) on March 30 and Colorado College (21-2) on April 1. Against
Hendrix, Oglethorpe trailed 4-2 midway through the second quarter
before the Warriors outscored the Stormy Petrels 8-1 for the
winning margin. Colorado College jumped out to an 11-2 first
quarter lead and never looked back as the Tigers added 10 goals
over the final three quarters for the winning margin. Oglethorpe
returns to action on April 7 when the Petrels host
Birmingham-Southern at 3:30 p.m.
Rhodes (1-5, 1-2 SCAC) went 1-1 on the week and
earned the program’s first-ever varsity win as well as
first-ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win. The Lynx
started the week with a 7-3 loss to Southwestern before rebounding
to beat Dallas, 13-5, on Sunday. Peter Hall led the Lynx against
Dallas as he tallied four goals and William Hornaday added three
goals in the win. Rhodes returns to action on April 6th & 8th
when they travel to Centre and Sewanee, respectively.
In its only match of the week, Sewanee
dropped a close 10-9 decision at Centre, Friday. With the loss,
Sewanee fell to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in league play. Down by three,
midway through the second period, the Tigers cut the deficit to two
when Reed Daniel scored his first goal with 8:04 left. Five minutes
later, Davis Brown added to the Sewanee total when he netted a
man-up goal off an assist from James Millard. Centre quickly built
its advantage back, when the Tigers added two goals to open the
third. After a pair of Sewanee goals from Daniel and Drew Lincoln,
Centre went up 10-6 with goals by Samuel Rush and Connor Stubbs.
With 4:09 left, Sewanee did mount a late comeback when Lincoln and
Brown combined for three goals. Sewanee finished with 45 shots,
compared to Centre, who fired 29 attempts. The Tigers also had
fewer turnovers and won the face-off battle. Unfortunately, Centre
goalkeeper Clayton Brown, who made 17 saves, nullified those
statistics. Brown led Sewanee with four goals on 15 shots. Lincoln,
Daniel, and Michael Morris were the other Tigers that scored.
Additionally, Morris added a game-high three assists. The Tigers
continue conference play with a 6 p.m. match against Millsaps April
6, in Sewanee.
Southwestern continued their win streak at home
this week with a pair of SCAC conference wins to improve to 3-8 on
the season and 3-1 in conference and moved into a tie with
Birmingham Southern for second place. Friday the Pirates hosted
Rhodes and after a scoreless first quarter SU got down to work,
scoring three goals in both the second and third quarter. Rhodes
attempted a comeback with two goals in the fourth, but Elliott
Kelly's goal gave SU some breathing room to close out the game.
Sunday, Southwestern scored the first goal of the contest but
Millsaps scored three unanswered to take a 3-1 lead into the second
frame. The game remained tight all the way into the fourth quarter
but then SU unleashed offensively and turned up the heat on defense
to pull away to the 9-4 final. The Pirates hit the road for the
first time this season to face first place Colorado College on
Friday night before facing-off with Hendrix on Sunday in Conway,
Ark.
