COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Jeff Nadel, a senior co-captain of the Colorado College men’s swimming and diving team, has been named one of 12 district finalists for a 2012 Rhodes Scholarship.

Nadel, a neuroscience major from Centennial, Colo., will interview for the prestigious award on Nov. 19 in Colorado Springs. Two of the 12 candidates will be chosen as Rhodes Scholars for study at the University of Oxford in Oxford, England.

Each year, two candidates from each of the 16 districts within the Unites States are among 83 Rhodes Scholars worldwide selected to study at Oxford. Colorado’s district includes Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota and Utah.

“While he has definitely had success as a swimmer and has been a major contributor to our team’s success," head coach Anne Goodman James said of Nadel, "it is not so much his athletic accomplishment that sets him apart from so many of the others. It is everything else that he brings to our team and our campus community now, and what I think he can bring to the world in the future.”

Selection is based on proven intellectual and academic achievement, but applicants also must demonstrate integrity of character, interest in and respect for their fellow beings, the ability to lead, and the energy to use their talents to the fullest.

Rhodes Scholars may earn two one-year master’s degrees, the second subject following a satisfactory completion of the first. At the discretion of the Rhodes Trustees, the scholarship may be renewed for a third year for those pursuing a doctorate.

More than 1,500 students nationwide annually seek institutional endorsements to begin the selection process.
