GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern alumnus and men's lacrosse assistant coach, Bill Bowman '92, has been named as the Interim Head Men's Lacrosse Coach for Southwestern University, replacing Coach Joe Ernst, as announced by Director of Athletics Dr. Glada Munt.
Bowman has been instrumental in starting the lacrosse program, serving as assistant coach for the first two seasons, and was the driving force behind the highly successful club program at Southwestern.
Southwestern went 1-11 overall and 1-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) in their first season (2010) and improved to 7-9 overall, 4-3 in the SCAC, last season to earn a bid to the SCAC Conference Tournament.
Bowman is no stranger to running the show as he coached the club team for 12 years. His club teams amassed a record of 93-75 including a perfect 31-0 conference record covering five seasons that culminated in five Lone Star Alliance Division II Championships (2005-2009). In each year the Pirates were invited to the National Tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals in 2008. Southwestern was ranked in the top 15 nationally since 2005 and ended their final season of club status in 2009 ranked #9 in the nation.
Under Bowman's tutelage there have been 14 All-Americans, 54 LSA All-Conference selections in addition to coaching the league MVP in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 as well as Offensive Player-of-the-Year in 2005, 2007 and 2008 and Defensive Player-of-the-Year in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009. For all of his hard work Bowman was named as Coach-of-the-Year twice, 2005 and 2008. He has vast experience in player development as only six players during his time with the club program have had prior experience.
Southwestern opens the 2012 season at home on February 18th, hosting Goucher at 1:00 pm. A national search for a head coach will begin in February.
