Smith blocked a punt that he recovered and returned for a touchdown in Saturday night's upset victory over #13 Trinity. Midway through the first quarter after both teams had exchanged punts, Smith burst through the line, blocked a Trinity punt and then scooped the ball up and rambled 12 yards to paydirt to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead - a lead they would never relinquish.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior placekicker Caleb Balderas of Austin College was perfect on his four kicks on the road at Kalamazoo, making both of his point after attempts and going 2-for-2 on field goals with a long of 33 yards. Sophomore linebacker/punter Vance Feuerbacher of Centenary had an impressive all-around performance for the Gents on Saturday in their season-opening loss to Hendrix College at home. Feuerbacher punted five times for 179 yards (35.8 average) with a long of 41 and landed two punts inside the 20-yard line, and chipped in defensively with a team-high nine solo tackles, two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Sophomore placekicker/punter Jesus Romero-Castillo of Lyon was 1-for-2 on field goals, 3-of-5 on PATs and had three punts for an average of 43.0 yards, including a long of 59 yards.
