BREANNA STEELE OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior from Happy Valley, Ore., has been selected the SCAC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week for meets ran Friday, September 13 and Saturday, September 14. SCAC Cross Country Release (Week 3)
Steele won the Southwestern University Showdown on Saturday by 45 seconds over the second place runner on the hot morning in Georgetown, leading wire to wire. Her time of 22:52.67 places her third all-time on the Southwestern 6k list. She improved her time three minutes and 25 seconds from this same race last year.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore Sophie Munoz of Trinity, in her first race of the 2024 season, rounded out the team scoring by posting a 5K time of 19:44 at the UIW Invitational. Most impressively, she ran almost the entire 5K without a spike on, having had her heel clipped early in the race. Her performance helped Trinity to a fifth place finish out of nine teams, composed primarily of D1 athletes. Junior Savanna Danner of McMurry led the War Hawks to a top finish among D3 institutions at the SU Showdown. She finished third among D3 runners, covering the 6k course in 25:00.65. Junior Emma Etzler of Texas Lutheran was the first Bulldog to cross the line for the second consecutive race at the Southwestern Showdown. She executed a smart race in challenging conditions to earn her first career top ten finish, finishing tenth overall with a time of 25:21.5 in the 6k. Senior Samantha Hernandez of St. Thomas placed 36th out of 76 finishers at the 48th annual Rice Invitational. Hernandez covered the 4k course in a time of 16:26.0. Senior Alyssa Harris of Dallas, running on one of the most complex and hilliest courses in the state of Texas, placed fifth in the University of Dallas Invitational, covering the 5k course in a time of 21:49. Sophomore Ashley Rivera of Concordia (Texas) set a new PR and finished 20th overall in a time of 26:32.84 at the women's 6k Southwestern Showdown. First-year Andrea Eckermann of Schreiner placed third overall in Saturday's Scheriner/UMHB Dual Showdown with a 6k time of 26:47.
